Dealing with noisy F35 footage

Hello members:

As much as I love the f35 footage I am having issues dealing with distracting noisy footage. I purchased neat video for davinci resolve and while it does eliminate all the noise it also gets rid of the feel of the f35. I am curious how you guys deal with the issue of working with the f35. Someone suggested isolating the parts of the shot that are noisy and running neat video through it. Has anyone have any experience with this? My guess is doing a garbage matte type of thing.

Noisy under what conditions? From my testing I rated the sensor at 400 ISO, and although it has an intrinsic texture to it (even properly, or slightly over-exposed), I've never found it objectionably noisy.

When I do rate the camera at 800 ISO, which is generally in situations with really hot windows or skies where I want to hold more highlight detail, I'll use a little bit of temporal noise reduction in Davinci.

I find that the combination of 2-frames/better/10% settings for temporal NR in Davinci works a treat to clean things up if they do get distracting.

Also, if you do need to clean up your shadows, then do a luminance key in Resolve to isolate the shadows, then perform a temporal noise reduction on just those darker parts of the image - this will take out the worst offending parts of the noise, whilst leaving full detail and texture in your midtones and highlights (which sells a bit more believably IMO).

Another thing I have found that helps preserve the feel is to limit the noise reduction to only the chroma noise. Possibly even only the red or blue channel depending on what you're getting. I will usually only use about 1/8th the amount of luma noise reduction as I do the chroma - and that's if I use the luma at all.

The best thing to remember is that it's noise 'reduction' not noise 'elimination'. Using less than you think you need often gives great results.

My F35 has a pretty harsh noise floor. Overall it's cleaner than most of the Reds I've used and beats my Alexa for sure when properly/overly exposed. But those seem to have a smoother transition from no noise to noise. But when you have to push the f35... it's like BAM! there's not much in those shadows... it gets pretty harsh, pretty quickly..

I don't think blame the operator is much help either guys. F35user used to be so loving :P

Temporal the sh!t out of everything and blend with original is my game. Also that mojo means nothing when your vimeo link looks like balls coz of the noise :P
