dealing with inexperienced director

I've also heard of 2K and 1080 prints to film that were very successful, and am under the impression india would be cheaper than the rest, yet quality may not be the same.

I shot a short film a while ago on Silicon Imaging's si-2k and blew it up to 35mm and it was gorgeous. I think most people are dazzled by RED digital cinema's camera capabilities and forget to focus on the fact that by and large, a 5k or a 9k resolution of an image is overkill even for 35mm, at least in my experience. That's not to say the camera isn't great, but it is part of RED digital cinema's plan to offer cutting edge technology in their cams even if there isn't really a use for it yet, in preparation for the day that someone does find a legitimate use for such an enormous resolution.

Also, I don't know if I'm the only one who thinks this...but does anyone else feel that RED footage has a very "RED" feeling to it that ISN'T filmic? From the footage I've seen, yeah it's good, but it doesn't look like film to me it looks like something else. It looks like RED.

We really only have priorities. (no offense to any AD's) Id like to not argue over wether or not an AD is a priority. In my opinion absolutely yes. Instead we invested in a good camera op, sound engineer, key grip, and gaffer. I am however going to try to talk the director into getting an AD. Budget is pretty much out by the time food is paid for.

Lairhair, I don't believe your reputation will be damaged as long as the images look great. People in the industry know that its not up to the DP to make the film work.

Just finish the picture, collect your paycheck and do your best at what you do, that's the only thing you can control. And as someone else mentioned, reset your boundaries and the tone of your relationship with the director, and keep making gentle adjustments to his behavior until he understands your role on the set, and hopefully comes to appreciate it ;-)

Just my 2c

that's rough, man. on three features, the AD has been the first crew member we bring onboard. I can't be trusted to keep myself on schedule. :)

I saw knowing with Nick Cage and it was output to film from Red footage. Looked exactly like film. Nobody I asked could tell it was shot on Red. That was the acid test for me. What you think you see is what you think you see. Its like the guy clucking around like a chicken telling me he can't be hypnotized. Yeah right. Whatever you say.

@ Finnegan...

This is just indistry gossip, but someone told me sometime spike Lee movies would print off DV even. I dunno how this could be true, but won't be surprised if it is. can anyone confirm this?

The minute 4K is introduced people will look at 1080 as 'small'. 6K comes I bet 4K will be mediochre to most. I still do SD, and dammit for work, on screen, processing power, 1080 is still pretty damn big.

As for spotting a RED look, I wouldn't be able to tell if I didn't know. I can't spot red between film. If I shot it and I know, before color grading maybe, yeah there's something there, but i think it's just the curves most ppl use.

But no, i don't think I can tell if footage is RED if I don't know beforehand.

Che's black and white scenes made me think digital, still, I knew it was red, and it was really high contrast.

Na man... I can't tell. I'm talkin bout stuff I know was shot on RED.

I'll argue with a lot concerning red, but not the image off this thing.

I can definitely Spot a D90, I think I can spot magic bullet. Still, someone has to tell me first.

@craigbowman's clucking like a chicken... :) lol

Yes, the film Bamboozled was shot using 15 Sony VX1000 and then transferred to film.

Sweet. That's just bad ass.

Bamboozled was a damn good movie. I can't get over the name sleep and eat.

She hate me was one of my favorite.

DV to film. Going SD has made the D90 experience much better for me.

Ok update time...

Yes it is twice as bad as I had expected. I would love to just focus on cinematography but I was a moron and decided to edit it too. By the time we get to post production it is going to be total mush. Lets just say I am so happy that the director "wants me to call action and keep everyone organized because he decided to take the lead roll. We had our first shoot today which was carefully location scouted by him it was a 10'x10' appartment with white walls a super weak electrical connection and you cant walk without sticking to the floor. He had the nerve to tell me he wasnt happy with the production values when my entire crew agreed that if we had Gordon Wills on the same set with the same gear if he didnt walk off within an hour he wouldnt have been able to do a better job.

I really need advice on this one!
