Just wanted to post this so no one else suffers this problem.
I recently upgrade my MAC(which I don't use that much anymore) to 10.4.5
Apparently in this upgrade or during addition of HVX drives or DVCPro codec my firewire ports became unknown to the OS. I figured it was HVX compatibility thing or somthing so I wasted near an entire day playing with drives, trying to get it to work playing with final cut settings, reinstalling software updates, reinstalling 10.4.5 etc, etc... Not the way you want to spend your first day with an HVX
Anyhow the short of it is this.
If you're having firewire probs with your MAC, and this seems to be common enough to have many post around the i-net, although mostly without a solution.
1st check and see if the firewire port shows up in system profiler. If it says nothing about your firewire, your ports are either really dead, or suffer from the same problem I had. At this point you'll realize that it's not just your camera that wont work. No firewire device will work.
The fix
Hopefully this helps someone.

The fix
- Shut down the computer.
- Disconnect all FireWire devices and all other cables, except the keyboard and mouse cable(s).
- Disconnect the computer from the power outlet and wait for 3 to 5 minutes.
- Plug the computer back in and turn it on.
- Reconnect the FireWire device(s) (one at a time if there is more than one) and test. Test with each FireWire port if you have more than one.
Hopefully this helps someone.
