Daybreakers

The concept is really cool, a needed break from vampire soap operas. Feels like The Matrix told from the POV of the machines.

Looks like something I could break out of my vampires ban for -- of course, it could be great, but it could be horrible, too. I'll give it a shot -- for Sam Neill, if nothing else.

As of this post on Rotten Tomatoes it has 100%. Thought that's prob going to change.

"Ambitious, smart and unique, the film creates an entire world that is guaranteed to intrigue you and leave you wanting more."

"While it's far from perfect, Daybreakers is an incredibly fun movie. Loaded with talents actors, beautiful camerawork (a stunning slow-mo shot in the finale proves this) and buckets of blood, I can't recommend this enough."

Of course it's going to be good - Aussie directors!

You might not want to be so vocal about that one, tmnt. LOL! I saw it. I'd give it an A- for gore and blood. Heck, they get an A- for premise, but fail on execution. That high-gloss, soft focus look was annoying and the fact that you could tell exactly where they were so atrociously greenscreened, like a bad 80's music video took me right out.

Willem Dafoe plays a guy named Elvis. Complete with cuffed jeans and a jacket that looks like a letter jacket from Grease. In fact, he sort of reminded me Kenickie.

I went in telling myself "Just as long as there are no vampires named 'Edward' " and of course that was Ethan Hawkes' character's name. LMAO!

I'm really surprised they didn't change that name. Just call him Ethan.

Actually, if you think about it, Ethan Hawke sounds like the name of one of those swashbuckling adventurers from the old 1930's and 1940's serials that inspired Indiana Jones. Maybe Charlie Kaufman can cook up some sort of wacky meta-adventure film for Ethan Hawke where he is playing himself playing the lead in a fictional old school adventure flick, and then one day it all turns real.

Only pulled about $15 mil opening weekend. Everyone is seeing Avatar or Sherlock.

Is there a name for that particular look they went for in this movie? It reminded me a lot of the recent-ish War of the Worlds movie with Tom Cruise...just very cool temp, soft and glossy? Just wondering if there is a term for that particular look.

Vampy.

It seems to look similar to the cold and glossy style of the Underworld films.

Doubt there's a name for it, but it's definitely in the tech-noir style.

Metro-vampy sounds good.

I think that works. And if you were to introduce heavier sci-fi elements, then maybe Cyber-vamp or Cyber-goth?

UPDATE: I really enjoyed this flick. 1st half was stronger than the 2nd half of the film, but still a lot of fun.

I concur. First half better than the second. But I really didn't expect it to end where it did. It was like they couldn't finish the story so they just said 'meh, we'll end it here'.

Cool ideas. Just fell flat in the end. Could have been something great.

You know what, that's where my "beef" with Daybreakers sort of comes from. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the film, but there was so much potential for more interesting stuff to happen on a grander scale. I don't mean in terms of budget and spectacle, but in a narrative sense.

Imagine if this were a TV series about how society has changed due to nearly everyone being a vamp? There are so many stories that could be told in that kind of a world. This film only seemed to scratch the surface of the premise, which sort of makes me want to say they kinda wasted it by making a single film about it, unless there are going to be sequels. I sure as hell would like to see a decent number of Daybreakers sequels instead of all these freaking SAW movies.

^ I concur (I love that word)

I mean it felt like it didn't do this world justice. It could have been a lot more, but it wasn't. I think it focused a bit too much on the cure. While it was important... the film just couldn't cover enough content to do it justice and satisfy what we expect out of the film. So you're right, it should be something more like a TV show.

Also, is it just me or did it feel like the 3rd act never really came? I felt like it was going into the third act but ended abruptly. I supposed if you broke it down you could identify a third act, but it wasn't enough of a punch IMO. That's why my friend and I just felt it ended abruptly.

Just got to this one.

Does anyone know if there's an alternate ending which depicted what they strongly implied Ethan Hawke was consdering doing, as in
mixing in the cured blood with the blood substitute about to go into mass production
? The actual ending seemed rather tacked on and obviously rigged to leave room for a sequel.
