Day one with an Avid, Reconnect.....

So my client delivered a drive with all the files, just wrapped up the avid installation and now its time to jump in. my 1st dumb question is how to reconnect the media. it does not appear to be obvious. He said run a consolidation and i should be set. Using MC6 on a Mac, and the files came from MC6 on a PC. Thanks in advance

Are these MXF files from another Avid? If so, at the root of your media drive you need to make some folders (if you don't have them already) so Avid will see the media. Make this folder structure

[DRIVE]/Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1/[MEDIA GOES HERE]

You can use any numbered folder - if you already have a 1 folder, make a 2 or 3 or 99 if you want and put the .mxf files in it.

Open Avid, it will recognize the folder structure as Avid media (note spelling and spacing - if you put a space between Media and Files it won't work), it will scan and index the drive and automatically relink everything.

Open your project, start editing. Pretty easy.

Yeah, turns out my boss copied everything over, but put everything in a project folder, not on the root which was the problem. and yeah they came from another Avid. Kinda Ridiculous that it has to be on the root of the drive, but coming from FCP7, I'm sure i've got plenty more surprises ahead...

Why is it ridiculous that it has to be at the root of the drive? It's key to Avid's media management. If you handed me an Avid project and media I can have it online in about 2 minutes, if that. If you had a complicated folder structure or your media sources were on separate drives it's very easy for programs to lose links to footage (see Premiere), you might get stuck doing the reconnection dance (FCP), and it's easy to miss files when you're handing projects off to another person (human error). Avid minimizes the likelihood of these things happening so you can get to work faster, with less hassle. It's actually very clever how they've done it.

And having the ability to just send bins back and forth between editors on different systems even between different cities where the media has been replicated is a godsend. Open bin, load sequence keep editing. I even had some third party software sync the mediafile folders over WAN so that the two of us always had the same media available regardless of who added it to the project. If you want FCP style, you could do everything via AMA, but be sure you keep it all organized and managed. As Butcher says, there is simplicity to having Avid manage my media so I can just concentrate on editing.
