Hi,
what do I need to know about shooting day for night on DVX?
Besides avoiding the sky, what set up in camera would work the best?

thanks

Re: day for night.

ND's help, and make sure you avoid anything like street lights or lamps that normally would be on.

...and watch shadows... it helps if it's an overcast day without a blaring sun and hard shadows...

Re: day for night.

I hate to disagree with Kai, but traditional day-for-night shooting requires very strong, harsh shadows. John's answer was more correct, in that you want to shoot early morning or early evening because that's when the sun is at its lowest, and will cast the strongest sidelight shadows.

The moon (which is ostensibly our light source at night, right?) is a tiny pinpoint hard-light source, and is the only light source. So to simulate moonlight, you'd want the sun to be harsh, low, and blasting light on one side of the face and dark shadow on the other (because at night there is no fill light). For the best look you may want to do as someone else mentioned, and position your actors so that they primarily are back-lit, with a strong hairlight.

If you choose to shoot on an overcast day, you'll probably have to augment the sunlight with an HMI or blue-gelled strong tungsten light to create that directional lighting effect.
