DaVinci Resolve 14

Adobe aficionados TAKE NOTICE - DaVinci Resolve 14 (v.13 skipped) has been just announced at NAB 2017! Fully rewritten back-end - 10 times faster, new improvements to its editing capabilities and compositing, and just added full blown audio (based on Firelight engine) - 4 in 1. As before, regular version is FREE (vs $$$$$ for Adobe CC Premier, After Effects, Audition, SpeedGrade). Public BETA of DaVinci Resolve 14 available now (though I couldn't find the link). Price drop for studio from $999 to $299.

Love this. Hope it pushes Adobe to step up their game competitively.

I wonder what BMD's angle is here. Software development is expensive and they are making strides, then giving it away free. I wonder if they're making a push to convert as many editors as possible, and eventually switch to a paid subscription model.

Either way, it's about time a new major player entered the field for NLE competition. FCPX has become a solid piece of software, but they aren't pushing the envelope on innovation, whereas it seems Resolve is really playing hardball and a fast pace. (I know Resolve entered this a while ago, but with this update they are really looking like a serious competitor for demanding, full fledged edit jobs, and showing intent to not be color software + editing, but rather a true no compromise end to end solution.)

Good stuff!

It's not totally free, well there is a free version but the Studio version is $299. Allows an editor
to be working on editing, a CC guy to be color correcting and an audio guy to be working on audio,
in collaboration from what I understand. $299 is the price of FCP X. Coincidence?

I'm impressed. Downloaded the Studio version on my laptop and it recognized my dongle right away. Tried cutting some DSLR footage on it (something Resolve ALWAYS struggled with on my laptop) and it cuts like butter. I'm excited to try it further when I get home tonight. The audio editing looks amazing too!

I'm pretty excited by this. Once my current Macbook breathes its last I'm really reluctant (unless Apple surprise and actually bring out a pro-level laptop under the Macbook Pro moniker) to continue paying the Apple tax. I currently use FCPX and, to be honest, that was the main reason I went for a new MBP last year, but if the cross-platform Resolve becomes truly competitive in the NLE space BMD can count on my $299 (probably about £500 sterling once we complete cutting off our noses to spite our faces) when I buy a Windows machine with twice the power for half the price.

Edited for spelling.

Editing with tracks looks so last century other than that the audio improvements look the most interesting part of the update.

It surprises me anyone bothers with Premiere with Resolve around and now the price is reduced to an absolute steal I would expect the sensible editors to leave the bloatware behind and jump ship to Resolve.

No news on Fusion? I expected that to be rolled into Resolve by now to compete with AD's Smoke and Foundry's NUKE Studio for finishing. This must be on the cards.

This pricedrop kinda sucks for everyone who already invested in Resolve dongles! Resale value just went to s*%t. I got a second dongle which I intended to sell as it is brand new, boxed....

Right now, everything is loses it's value except for C-Stands & microphones. If you're wanting to sell something, don't wait, sell it now. Also, if you're wanting to buy something now, that you won't use until later, 90% of the time, wait until later to buy because it'll be the same price or cheaper.

True story.

Does anyone know if the dongle will still be required for the studio version or are they moving away from that?

My understanding is the dongles still work but they'll also support registration keys now and those will be the default for new purchases.

I just edited a little piece with the Resolve 14 Public Beta using A7S2 XAVC UHD footage and was reasonably impressed with features but the performance didn't seem quite up to Premiere's. Both have some difficulty on my 6700HQ 960M 4GB laptop but Resolve 14 proved to have issues with smooth playback at every points or if I didn't wait a few seconds between moving the playhead and pressing play. Stabilizer also crashed half the time. Still great for grading though...
