Date & Time Stamp

Does anyone know if it's possible to Time/Date Stamp with an HPX170 through composite out? I can do it with firewire but when I go direct to DVD recorder with rcas - for legal depos - it doesn't work. Just hoping there's a setting or something.
Thanks everyone

So you're using the time/date stamp function, so it's being recorded in the video, right?

Just turn on the date/time display, and turn VIDEO OUT OSD to "ON", and the date/time should be sent out the composite ports. Probably want to make sure everything else is turned off so you don't get the timecode counter or the focus data or all that.

Thanks for the quick reply - btw I also got your book when I bought the camera and love it!
The problem with that option is that it will stamp the rec/pause function - unless you know of a way to make that disappear
Thanks again

I am experiencing this problem also. As a legal videographer, I need a time/date stamp out the firewire and out the analog, without other elements of the OSD. Considering that the dvx100b was able to transmit the time/date stamp via S-Video and the composite, I'm surprised they took it away in the HPX. After all, they advertised this camera to legal videographers specifically because of the time-date stamp!

See, deposition videographers have to record a backup, and that means another deck. P2 cards are useless for depos, one must use a dv deck or a firestore. The only other output is the analog. I mean, it's great that we can get the timestamp out of via the firewire now, but they had to take it away from the analog to pay for it? What were they thinking? Can this be fixed with a firmware update?

Or is there some other way?

Not sure what you're asking -- are you saying that you don't have the time/date on the analog? If so, you're doing something wrong, because the HPX170 can most definitely do that. You have to turn time/date on, and turn time/date stamp on, and you probably have to turn video out OSD on. But... that might mean a red dot on the analog output when recording...

I have a HPX170 and I do legal videos.
The problem I have is when I use composite to a DVD recorder for back up, there is no way to shut off ,
the green pause, the AF and zoom.

How do I get ONLY the time and date stamp to show?

When I tried to leave the P2 cards out, then I get the red no P2, flashing and that also come through in My back up.

Any ideas?
And yes, OSD is off.

I have done depositions with my HVX200 for many years, going composite out to a hard drive burner and going via firewire to a laptop running OnLocation. As stated the HVX200 does not record the time/date stamp when camera is recording, only when it is in pause mode does the time stamp output to HD burner and computer.
But I'm sure you know that.
My recent solution was to buy an AC-AG160a, time stamp present, I put 2 64gig SD cards in, record onto both cards at the same time and right there I have a backup. My setup time has been cut in half and I eliminated 2 cases from my load.
Expensive solution but I am enjoying the hell out of it!

Buying a new camera is not a solution.
I obviously got this camera (HPX170), after having a DVX100 for the legal work, and was under the assumption that this was better than the HVX200 for legal jobs, because the Time/Date signal was stream out. Did not know, other things were gonna be stream out as well.

I JUST WANT DATE AND TIME. (simple).

BTW
I have FCP 7, so if anyone knows of a plug-in...

Maybe a crack that can be done with a SD card, maybe?

That's not a true backup since recording will stop on both cards if the first card fails for some reason. Didn't the new AG-AC90 make an improvement on dual-card recording by continuing to record on the 2nd card even if the 1st card fails?

Yes, the AC90 changed it to work that way.

On the AC160/AC130, you have two copies of all footage shot, so if either card fails, both cards stop recording, thus you have identical footage on both cards. Which, I guess there's some value there, but I think they did the right thing in changing it on the AC90 so that you will always have at least one copy of the recording even if one of your cards were to fail.

Actually buying a new camera is exactly the solution. either HMC80/82 or 130a/160a. For depos I found the 130a/160a (I say "a" because it is the only thing you can buy now) to best option I have used. Outputting to DVDs is not my cup of tea... too unreliable.
set the camera on SD (not HD) and use the firewire out to a firestore or iVDR recorder. you then simultaneously record on your SDHC card and your firewire device. easiest and most compact way to do a depo.
If your SD card fails in your camera your hard drive recorder will still be good (actually I use the HDD as my primary and my SDHC cards as my back-up)
side note: Barry said there was no time date function with the AC90
