Data storage Prices gone pointless???

Hi guys I was looking for a storage unit for flashcards when on shoot, to offload on so can reuse flash card without having to transfer data straight to a computer.

Started looking at prices and came across this:

NextoDI NVS2500 price: £1408.99 :Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG)::Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Can buy a Mac Book pro for that view and even edit for same price.

Someone tell me who prices these units up, or who would buy this?

Am I missing something here, view clip on one inch screen or 17inch mac book pro????????????

I dont get it

While I don't know that particular unit, I would guess durability and reliability are the main advantages.

IMO doubling data is good

laptop and a HD kept apart even if only by a could of meters

as well as failure of the device other risks need to be considered on set

theft, split coke etc

I find my 1TB firewire 800 external is plenty fast for editing. A netbook with 4GB ram for a location storage/editing solution...priceless.

I bought it and used it for a trip to Brazil's Amazon basin. We were in a place that had limited or no power, and I was able to power it from AA batteries for offloading.

Is it expensive? Sure. But it works and if you're shooting somewhere remote and need something like it, it's worth the money.

EDIT:

I certainly could have bought an ass-load of CF cards, but I also needed to offload CF and SD cards shot by a photographer traveling with us.

I use a (hackintosh) netbook and two redundant USB bus powered HDDs for in-field dumping (although usually we're within spitting distance of our editor or someone on the post team to run the backup and since I use the GH1 it holds a lot on a card so I usually don't need to dump until the end of the shoot anyway.)

Works great!

When I get home I dump to my firewire drives, and then clear off the USB hard drives occasionally. The things are so damn cheap now...you can get a 160gb one for something like $50 and then get an enclosure. The drives to have to be the best or the biggest, just work.

My netbook has a 32GB SSD so not ideal, need the externals, but I like having the SSD because it gets thrown around set a bit and gets used for all kinds of different things...script, directors notes, teleprompter, slate, quick trip to DVXUser when something goes wrong...depends on the situation, but it's nice to have something fast and that you know won't fail mechanically.
