Data Recovery

My 2nd hard drive on my MAc Pro crashed yesterday.

It won't show up on my desktop, in Finder, or in Disk Utility. Is there any software i should try before trying a data recovery service? I NEED some of the data, and no, it was not backed up.

I'm assuming you're running a system with Mac's awful HFS+?

If the hard drive isn't shot, you could run some common linux distro's recovery disc and mount the HFS+ drive using 'mount -t hfsplus', then pull the data... but it requires some linux knowledge.

You could also buy an external drive enclosure that fits your hard drive and try to mount it through another Mac to pull the data.

If you suspect the drive is shot (maybe you hear a clicking sound, etc.). You could try to freeze the drive in your home freezer (seal HD in a freezer baggy) and then it might buy you 20 minutes or so to grab your data.

You could also try to view the HD in Windows with HFS explorer (free). http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/hfsx.html

Yep, it sure was...I have talked to the tech people in Santa Clara and there is a major firmware issue on these drives that has been occurring lately. I need to take the drive in and they will run a test on it. If it is indeed the firmware issue, they will fix it free of charge. My fingers are crossed...

I have recentaly lost my data for mac operating system.I have used Stellar Phoenix Macintosh data recovery software. It recover almost all of my data. This software has GUI interface and very easy to use.You can try this software may be it will help you out to recover your data. They are also providing data recovery services. Almost all the times I've had problems with drives mounting, I've changed the case and bingo...problem fixed. The one time it didn't, it was off to Drivesavers. They were not cheap but they recovered all the data.
