darker in the corners

Dear all
For the past year and a half I've been very busy shooting a series for a popular cable channel. The show is coming out in February, it's quite unlike anything else on television and it's all shot with DVX100A cameras.
For the most part the cameras have proved very reliable (though we did destroy one), but there are a couple of anomalies about the camera that I would love to have explained.

We shoot a lot of interviews where the subject has two cameras on them, one wide and one tight. The subjects are sitting in front of a luminous white background. The cameras are most often set by professional camera men and focus is always manual. The problem is that the wide angle footage never looks as sharp as the tighter footage. It can't be that the subject moves out of focus, because that would affect the tight much worse than the wide, and the tight is almost always in focus.

My second riddle is vignetting... In the interviews I just mentioned our white backgrounds are usually darker in the corners. We assumed for a long time that it was because our background was actually unevenly lit, but a recent experiment showed that the background is perfectly even. Further, the vignetting is in both the wide and the tight, suggesting that the problem isn't what's in front of the lens, but something behind it.
Any ideas?
TB.
