Dark Reflection trailer

Looks pretty twisted. It's hard to judge the quality of your images and sound by watching it on YouTube though. What's the final running time?

I'm sure lots of people saw your trailer and liked it. I did, and almost didn't post anything. But, after reading your response to nobody posting, I decided to slip on my clown shoes, grab my selzer bottle and post something.

First, I LOVE the tense (and twisted) soundtrack... the happy horn honks with a minor chord cracked me up, and made me feel uneasy at the same time. Wonderful sound that still lingers in my mind as I write this. It's a great "tag" to help get you noticed and let people remember your film. (VERY CLEVER from a marketing standpoint).

I'm not sure what the film is about though... aside from a clown who has nightmares while he's out of make-up, and the things his alter ego does (or seems to do) inside (and maybe outside) his mind.

As far as video quality and technique, I'm not qualified to give advice or pass judgement but can only express an opinion... I'm smart enough to know that no matter how carefully, creatively and exactly you shoot, light and prepare for a scene, if it over shadows your story, you already lost me as a viewer. Personally, when I watch a film, I try to look at my watch the second I'm "reminded" (distracted) by some cut or edit that takes me out of the fantasy. In other words, how long it takes until I realize that I've become aware that I'm just watching a film. Few films have made it past the 5 minute mark.

Needless to say, I didn't look at my watch during your trailer, but I also didn't get the "payoff" that would make me want to go see it or buy the DVD. I remember the twisted HORN sound... and in my opinion, if the trailer ended with a close-up shot of the horn (maybe being stepped on, or squeezed by a bloody hand as it squeaks those last two "happy" notes) I would feel like the clips ended "full circle" and with some sory of expected "payoff".

Just my opinion. YES, I DID THINK IT WAS PRETTY DARN GOOD ENOUGH TO MAKE ME WRITE A RESPONSE! Thanks for posting it!

Bartender, get my clown friend a full seltzer bottle and a whip cream pie. I'll have a bucket of confetti, with a rubber chicken as a chaser.

Mmmmm... sounds good.

Trailer looked good to me... as stated above, youtube sucks (especially on a mac), so I won't go into any details unless you give me a better version to critique. Definitely different from a lot of the "horror" shorts I've seen around (or at least the teaser was).

Yes!
I really enjoyed the Trailer. I don't watch this type of movie but I really enjoyed your work. I also agree with the former poster that The horn sound effect made me laugh.
Good Job!

Thanks so much guys for the responses, and Matt, great idea about the horn at the end of the trailer/film. I'm going to give that some real thought as the film isn't 'final' yet. And your guess about the story, you're right on the money there...

I'm glad you bothered to respond to these posts, and also, that you didn't misinterpret my opinion as being negative.

So many times, I watch trailers from movies, including multi-million dollar main-stream films, and find that they either unload the entire plot in 60sec., or they barely let me know what the film is about! Yours gave me enough information to take a guess (and I was right) so on that end of it, I guess your trailer does exactly what it's supposed to do.

I'm also glad that you are at least considering playing with horn idea... The way you use the sound, almost makes it seem like it's an actual character. It's just one of those things that you probably didn't plan for, but it just happened to evolved through your editing. (Yup, YouTube sucks). The horn works, and I don't think it over shadows the story line. In fact, I personally think it can work on the same level as those two notes in "Jaws". Or like those five notes in "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind".

I see you're from NYC... The land of the "No Honking" signs on the street corners by all the "box" intersections. Maybe an insert of one of those signs with some blood on it? Just a thought...

Anyway, GOOD LUCK with your film/trailer. I want to see the final cut, and who knows, maybe one day I will... On the BIG SCREEN!

No thanks bartender... I'm going to use my "last drink" money to buy a ticket and go see that clown movie... again.

Matt
