Damaged MiniDV Tape

Hi,

I have a couple of mishandled tapes given to me with broken lids and torn/ripped tape. Has anyone tried fixing a tape by removing it from the old shell and installing it in a new shell? Any pointers?

I have, but only with VHS tape which is much bigger and easier. That wasn't a problem.

I would try unsrewing the tape case and moving the whole "reel" of tape across. It was fiddly with VHS, so I should think it will be tricky. I found the little spring and metal positioners kept popping out and trying to hide, so be aware of that.

Is a missing lid a problem for capture? If not, capture the footage and print back to a new tape via firewire.

Forgot to mention that bit!

Use some old camcorder in case it all goes wrong! If it does, don't blame me! :laugh:
