Damaged footage (24p and 30p)

Hey,

I shot my first feature film on the Panasonic DVX100 (original). I wasn't the cinematographer but was the Writer/Director. I have footage that was suppose to be shot 24p Advanced. for the most part it was but I also have footage that has noticeable interlacing artifacts. I also have footage that in the log shows it being 29.97 not the correct 24p.

I am told the Scene File knob can be hit quite easily. I do not know if this was an accident or done purposely. Has anyone had this problem before?

Is there any way to prepare it? This has unfortunately damaged my movie considerably.

Any ideas?

Chris

DVX footage is all recorded as "29.97"; you have to strip out the pulldown to turn it into 23.976. Some editors, such as Premiere Pro and Vegas and EDIUS, don't need to do anything special for this, they just automatically "know" how to treat the footage as 24P.

FCP can automatically recognize 24pA footage, but it doesn't automatically recognize 24P Regular footage. For 24P Regular, you have to run it through the Cinema Tools application to strip out the pulldown.

Check your footage and see if it's 24P, 24PA, or 60i. Play it frame by frame; if it's a sequence of three progressive frames followed by two interlaced frames, it's 24P, and if you're on FCP you'll need to use Cinema Tools on that footage. If the footage is 4 progressive frames followed by one interlaced frame, then it's 24pA footage. But if every frame is interlaced, then you've got 60i footage and you're in trouble. You can try to convert that using something like DVFilm's Maker or Nattress' film motion plug-in to salvage that footage.

Barry,

Thanks for the info. Some of the footage shows as 24p and other as 29.97 in FCP. It was suppose to all be shot 24p Advanced. What I think has happened is the knob got turned perhaps by accident.

For instance I have a scene of one girl and you can see her glasses on the handles have terrible artifacts. It makes me think it was shot interlaced, I don't know but it is 29.97. It is very strange. The footage was shot low light with candles in the scene and three Lowel lights.

Why do you think my footage is showing up as two different frame rates? Most of the footage shows up as the correct 24p.
