F3: Dallas Sunset Timelapse

I pity the fool who sells their F3! :costumed-smiley-047

I'm sticking with mine, and will probably buy another!

This was shot on s-log to the internal cards (if I had my hyperdeck with me on this shoot I wouldve used it) and graded in Premiere cs6 using my tried and true concoction of stock color tools.

Hi Richard, very nice work! Did you use any exposure adjust methods on this, or was it constant aperture, gain, shutter throughout? Any re-exposure required in post?

Oddly enough some of the very first things I shot with my F3 were time lapse sun rises and and sunsets. Later I also discovered the TLCS feature and tried to incorporate it into my time lapses to help control exposure without having to do manual iris pulling during the shooting. It does work quite well but I haven't been out in ages (or woke up early enough to beat the sun) to give it another whirl.

Sun-sets on the other hand are a little bit easier, here was one I did coincidentally the same night my son was born that turned out pretty good (sorry this version only 720p and you need to watch HD version on website)

Thanks Dennis. I started exposed as open as I was comfortable with, then when the screen was almost totally black, I readjusted iso/aperture for night. Then in post, I did a long dissolve between the sunset and the night shot. It was plenty to work with minus the issues with recording to the cards; you can see the jagged aliasing on the roof in the foreground and the noise in the night shot.

Yes I too later learned how much work it was in post, and how I might have shot things differently.

In the sunset I posted I was pulling iris in very slow adjustments but it ruined it the time lapse so I had to do many short 2-3 frame cross dissolves which resulted in the stepping you see in the sun, and lack of smoothness in its movement.

Also with the F3's they seem to get a lot of chroma noise when shooting the sun directly, its jagged and absolutely ugly. I didn't notice it much in your time lapse, did you play with any PP settings to reduce the effect?

Not sure what you mean by chroma noise, I haven't seen that before. I only get noise in the shadows when I turn up the gain. This was set to s-log RGB mode so I didn't have any ability to play with the profile settings.

I'll pull up a frame grab from a 60p slo mo shot I did of some super heros walking off in the sunset... gimme a sec...

Look at that horrendous artifacting around the sun:

I think this turned out great for being done on the F3, which is kind of my point. Of course a dslr would give one more options for time lapses...but as I always say, "better" is influenced by the carpenter more then the hammer.
