D90 with RED and HVX footage

I was shooting this viral music video and at first was only going to use the D90 with a simple concept of just showing portraits. Then I was like, I need to get a little performance in there too etc... now I wished I shot all the portraits on the HVX but its only a viral video anyway so I kept in all the D90 stuff. Geoff Reisner shot the performance stuff on the HVX. RED footage is all the story line stuff.

I think that the 3 looks work great together. At least on vimeo I am not impressed that the HVX would have been a better choice for the portrait work than the d90. While the RED imagery is clearly the best, the HVX and d90 don't have that dramatic a difference.

It looks like some of the d90 footage was shot handheld, and the little shakes are the worst for that camera. The portraits where the d90 was on sticks are much better. There also appeared to be a few portraits with focus issues, such as the girl @4:03. It is difficult accurately getting focus with the d90's screen sometimes, but I will use the cameras autofocus in the still mode to set the focus, then switch to LiveView and film. This only works with a camera on sticks when the subject can hold their mark.

Great work, and another demonstration of how effective the d90 can be (while we wait for the next version to come out--or the Scarlet to drop in price.)

i figured since this was double posted i would do the same

"neat stuff man.

The shots of the woman smoking, and putting on makeup were all the RED? And then the portrait shots were a mix of the hvx and D90?"

One further thought--

To really bring out what can make the d90 'special' you might have chosen a wider F-stop to narrow your DOF for the portraits (and then REALLY watch your focus). The 50mm F1.4 becomes a 75mm with the crop factor, and can give a beautiful look in portraits. Of course ND filters needed for this in the outside shots.

Thanks.
That D90 was hard to work with. I borrowed it from Mark Harris and just started shooting not knowing what I was doing. I figured out the auto focus thing with the guy with the dreads but I think he was one of the last people I shot. :( The other people were hit and miss with focus. That one girl that was really out of focus I was going to cut but the rawness of it I liked so it stayed. The video was only meant to be a viral video anyway.

Yeah the RED footage was all of the actress. We actually shot her for Mark Harris's short film but the footage fit perfect for the story line so I asked if I can use it. The only shot i wanted to get extra was a crime scene but the timing for the actress and my cop car hook up didn't line up in time. I can shoot it next week so it may get done.

While the RED imagery is clearly the best, the HVX and d90 don't have that dramatic a difference.

I will say that every time an HVX shot appears, I get thrown out of the "feel" of it. Sorry, I am allergic to the "video look" for music videos and films ;)
