What does the D300s bring to the table that the D90 doesn't have regarding shooting video? Wanting to upgrade and I need some advice. Thanks

As far as shooting video goes? I don't think there's much significant difference in quality right now.

Note though, I own a D300s and haven't tried the D90 yet.

One thing that I am aware of is they did a fair amount of work on the rolling shutter, still not perfect (even the RED has issues) but a lot better.

I have both and IMO, the D300s has a much cleaner image. It also works for much longer before overheating...if it ever does. I've started a comparison thread a while back but not many people were interested so I let it go. If you can afford it, go for the D300s.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "bring to the table." What you are upgrading from, and what you want to do with video function? In the right technical circumstances, as you can see on vimeo and other sites, from both cameras the video can be excellent. From what I've seen of the D300s (that is, seen on websites via a computer monitor, not native on a reference monitor), the difference is small on still video frames, and negligible to nonexistent on video playback.

And I guess it depends on what other film making equipment you already have. For video, I would buy the D90 and I would use the extra I would have paid for the D300s for a new mic or tripod.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a D90 that I am considering letting go primarily because of the "out of the box" video quality. Actually my questions are will I get more out of the D300s with regards to a cleaner image or should I look to some other camera for a cleaner image. Of course I am trying to get as close as possible to what I can expect for my dedicated video cameras.

not worth it to get the D300 (for video), if you want to upgrade you will need to jump ship and go Canon 7D

No, really the D300s would be worth it. Some nice extra features like the duel card slot. Not to mention you will be getting a top of the line still camera that does pretty good video. But like all DSLRs you have to work around some of the limits.

I would suggest if you can afford a few hundred more bucks get the D300s.

I was going to jump ship but the 7D is just not there yet. Overheating, not sharp, allasing, moire. Besides this is a D90 vs D300s thread.

You get mildly better rolling shutter reduction. You also get an image that is a little bit cleaner and more defined than the d90, but not much.

There is also an autofocus button that touted, but it is so slow in its response that its basically unusable.

If you are talking about video, then dual card slots will not make any difference. There is still a 5 minute recording limit, overheating, and NO manual controls.

There is not enough there for me to get rid of my D90.

I am a video noob so take what I say in that context.

If you're primary concern is video I would go with Canon. I hate the Canon ergonomics from a stills standpoint, but I don't think thats as much of a factor for video.
