D90 Video questions (export/workflow)

Hi,

First of all I'd like to say I learned a lot from the topics inhere, thanks for that! However I still have a few questions about the D90 video mode..

I record my movies with 1280x720 PAL (Europe) and import them at Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. When creating a new Project at Premiere:

I HAVE to chose Standard (which basically is 4:3 instead of 16:9, as you actually record with the D90), because when picking Wide screen (16:9) the view of the footage becomes squeezed (not in the correct shape, you know what I mean). And I do not get that when I pick Standard (4:3).

Anyway after editing etc, I have to export the movie as 4:3 as well since I imported them with 4:3 in first place (when picking 16:9 it becomes, yet again out of shape).
So eventually my movie gets these settings after exporting: 720*576 (25FPS), size of about 700mb for a movie of 3mins.

After this I usually encode it with SUPER(c), however I just found out with the latest version of the program you get a small ad in your video after encoding ('created with SUPER'), which is really annoying, guess I'll be looking for another encode program soon... I'd like to know which programs you guys use for best (optimal) online purposes and with which settings if I may ask?

When watching Vimeo I've seen everybody exports/encodes their D90 movies in .mov (Quicktime). Is this a must for best quality (for online purposes) or is it just personal taste?

Thanks in advance!

the d90 doesn't record pal. maybe you've found the pal setting but that's just the video output. recording is always 24 fps you should probably use that for your project. as for aspect ratios that's just a matter of interpreting the footage correctly and/or stretching to fit. but i'm curious, if you're looking for the bext possible output why are you editing in dv? i'd edit in 1280x720 24 fps mjpeg since that's what the camera records.

True.. Since I have been using that option for years (edit in DV), I never looked for anything else but the standard presets.. I've just created my own preset (D90 with 1280x720 24fps) with all the correct values, that definitely looks better now :D Totally forgot about that..

And now I need to see how to export and encode correctly (what do you guys use for that? SUPER(c) did it for me).

Thanks again..

i use prores for masters and x264 for copies, either through ffmpeg or the quicktime component. not sure if it exists for windows. it's easily the best codec i've found and it's h.264 compliant thus very compatible.

I just looked for it but doubt it exists for windows as well, will have to look further to find something similar..
Anyway I have followed your advice and now have the correct video output, big thanks for that! The resolution is 1280x720, movie is about 3mins long and 124mb big (.mp4 file). I guess its "normal" now, however I can't seem to find the option to export as .mov (Quicktime). Or isn't that possible through Premiere Pro encoder?
Here the screenshots as available options when exporting a movie:

These are the options I picked, correct me if I did something wrong :)

General settings:

H.264 is one of the best to pick (correct me if I'm wrong?)

Custom for your own values:

I just noticed 'Multiplexing' is standard on 'MP4' and when I pick 'NONE' the movie output gets the .m4v extension (I guess you export to .mov directly instead of .mp4 or .m4a first as shown here).

Thanks for the help again!

I enjoyed watching that - the music was fun.

Have you used exposure lock yet? And I noticed some shots were overexposed. I think my D90 is pretty much permanently set at -.3/.7 exposure adjustment now cause it tends to overexpose scenes.

I hope you had good ventilation in there! :)

Thanks Jester2138 :)
indeed, forgot about the AE-Lock (which caused the flickering exposure)..

and actually there was no ventilation, only a back- and frontdoor, I just went outside from time to time, graffiti can smell! :D
