D90 setup/rig

Ooh I like that Mamiya, very retro. It looks like something from the great depression. Very appropriate for our time. One of these indie rail riser plates might do the trick for ya Ralph http://www.indifocus.com/products_indirailspro.htm

The Indian follow focus is on ebay, I'm looking at getting one myself. The matte box is a cavision. Cavision also have a sunshade that's the same size for $85 with a metal mount or $50 with a plastic one. It takes a french flag too. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/310722-REG/Cavision_LH100M_LH100M_Sunshade.html

I think you'll find it looks like a movie camera with the Mamiya, but if you wanna sneak around you could try something like this-
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/52mm-3-stage...3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66:2|65:1|39:1|240:1318

wait, before you buy that matte box from BH, note that it has to attach to the lens itself and you will not be able to pull focus. it's for lens that focus internally.

Car3o, my lens hood is probably about as long as yours as my follow focus is also in a similair position and I notice some vignetting using the 28mm. Perhaps I should increase the girth of my hood (cut a new hood) but it seems to be a similair girth to that Mamyia hood that Ralph Oshiro just grabbed on ebay. Anyway, i was wondering if you had vignetting problems due to the length of the hood. It's either my girth or length. thanks

The matte box was set to my 28mm lens and had to push the matte box in as close as I possibly could. I haven't got a rubber hood yet to try on, but from where the matte box sits, there was not noticeable vignetting on the LCD. I have to try and record some video or take a picture to test it. I'll let you know the results when I get a small hood, which I think I will tomorrow.

Yeah I figured that out eventually. Lucky I didn't go out and spend a fortune on a matte box thanks to Ralph's bellows tip. I picked up one of the mamiya bellows from adorama in mint condition for $60. The hasselblad one looks like it would work well too.

Hey Car3o did you post something about being able to color correct ProRes files in photoshop?

Yeah, but it wasn't prores. It was just your native files from the D90. If you have CS3/4 you can open the avi with Photoshop and use the animation pallet and then export to a loss less codec. I've done it with a few vids, turned out nice. But, heads up, the information on the avi's are pretty weak, so if you push your channels to much, you'll have some pretty nasty footy.

Man, I should've got some bellows. Didn't even think of that. But I'm not sure how to mount it. They aren't your standard 15mm rails. Look smaller. But ah well, I've got my matte box, I"ll stick with that for now.

I'm still waiting for mine to arrive but it looks like I should be able to secure the rods on the bellows to my cavision rods with the matte box mount that comes with the cavision rig, perhaps with a bit of modification. I'll report back next week when i get it all together. And I have those rubber lens hoods on order to connect the lens to the bellows.

Nice ill have to see how i go with mine, i was hoping the wider 77mm zooms i have (80-200 2.8, 28-70 2.8) would just fit nicely without hoods, how important is it to have them completely shrowed I suppose it can't be right in there becuase we have to access the focus for FF

Here are some pics from my first attemt at a d90 rig, with a very homemade matte box (orginally used for a HPX500+Brevis Rig), indi FF and brevis support system

Is this the FF you are talking about:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CINE-Follow-Foc...ptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Just want to make sure I am picking up the right thing. Was thinking about it, plus the XVsm: http://www.indifocus.com/products_indirailspro.htm Probably the CAVision, but I want to make sure the FF has the correct gear set/mount for Nikon 50mm f1.8.

Thank you all for the help, this is way better than paying 2k for the Redrock. :D

This site has the specs on all the old Nikon lenses. http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/50mmnikkor/index.htm The 50mm f/1.8 has an outer diameter of 63.5mm.

Yeah that's the indian FF I'm thinking of getting but they have a better deal for $300 with a whip. http://cgi.ebay.com/CINE-Follow-Foc...14&_trkparms=72:1205|66:3|65:12|39:1|240:1318 I'd also ask them to send gear rings in the 55-65mm and 65-75mm range. It's unlikely you're gonna need a 110mm ring. Unless you're planning to mount a bazooka! The ebay ad you posted has a "make an offer" option so if you don't want a whip you could maybe offer them $200 and see what happens. They sell the whip seperately too.

The Indifocus FF seems reasonably priced too.

I went for the full cavision rig because it is so adjustable, but you can't beat the indifocus on price.
Yeah 2k is a lot for a 1k camera.

wanted to share my D90 rig as well. major pieces finally came in just in time for Christmas.

How is the panning with the miller? Any rolling shutter?

What no 50mm 1.4, are you afraid of the dark?

oh, sorry: i thought u meant "merlin steadicam" not miller....

Miller fluid head is awesome, love it so far, need to play with it more.

I've put all my money into reasonably fast glass as I'll be shooting a lot at night. I'll get the matte box, follow focus, and rods later.

I've been thinking about getting a Mathews M24 tripod from the US. Miller HQ is here in Sydney so I'm going to approach them first and see if I can get a deal.

I got a steadytracker instead of a merlin, it's a third of the price of a merlin and doubles as a mini-tripod. It will be interesting to see how the 2 compare with the D90 mounted. I should be able to pull focus with the steadytracker which is a big no no with the merlin......hence your need for a wireless FF.

I'm really happy with the miller. I got the slightly used kit (legs + head DS-10) for $850 off of ebay. Was looking for a good tripod/head and of what I've read on here, miller was at the top... I'm not familiar with Mathews...

Highly recommend redrock micro mattebox when u get to it - it is A+ quality for the price. swing away is greatly convenient...

saving for fast glass down the line...

got merlin to balance today, uhh.... took time... - for me it was the size of it mostly, wanted something i could take in a backpack when i travel and have it handy to get shots here and there...

yeah the size and weight is certainly a plus for the merlin. I might get one later on if the steadytracker doesn't give me fluid enough motion.

The miller is about the only piece of kit that is cheaper here than in the US but it's still a bit pricey unless I can get some sort of deal from the factory. The Mathews is sold at B&H, it is very cheap, the guys on the HV30 forum rave about it.

I put fastish glass as my number one priority thinking I could cut a few corners in other areas for the moment. So far I have a 50mm 1.4, 18mm 2.8, 28mm 2.8, 105mm 2.5 and a 28-85mm 2.8-3.5. I want some even faster glass but it's really expensive.
