D90 post workflow with NeatVideo

For those that use NeatVideo, Matt's stair-stepping plug-in, ProRes, and Color correction:

What is your order after importing your avi's? (I am trying to find the best method for keeping the generation loss to a minimum.)

Since you cannot edit AVI's in the Color application, I am assuming that you convert to ProRes first. But then you have to shoot it out again after color correction.

So anbody who has a solid order that works for them would be very helpful.

stairstep first, then neat video, then instant hd, then add noise to break up the artifacts, then color correction with colorista and looks. i rarely use color, way too complicated unless you have a couple of days to grade a 30s spot.

hi matt,
if i convert d90 avi file to prores before everiting(creating a droplet with compressor as zak forsman did) do you think that i have to setting the file size 1280x720(square pixel) or 1280x801?
i will do this before importing the file in final cut and add your filter.
thanks

I use stairstep and neatvideo in virtualdub, and then export 'full processing mode', compression PICVideo M-JPEG 3 VfW quality level at 20/20.

Should it normally be 8 times the file size of the clip? Eg: 100MB original file becomes 800MB. Surely it'd be around the same if not more? I must be doing something wrong here, it's like instanthd size...

It's probably all in the output format you're using. ProRes files are decently large in comparison to the original AVI files.

Just curious... Before or After your edit?
since i do everything in fcp there really isn't any before and after, it's all put together when i hit render. i don't typically render intermediates, and if i did i would just go to prores or uncompressed without any other filtering. if you have a fast computer and don't need to use color i don't see any reason to transcode, especially if your goal is to minimize generation loss.

So as you go in realtime. Coolski.

no, i always do it after, especially since i rarely edit myself. i was talking from a technical point of view. the end result is the same when it comes to generation loss, since filters aren't applied until you render.

So Matt, just to be clear - you're editing the AVI files out of the D90 in FCP? Rather than transcode it into ProRes or whatever before editing. Correct?

Trailer looks great by the way, and I only noticed skewing in a few shots, probably correctable with Deshaker or that technology the Foundry demoed at NAB, assuming they release it...

I'm not sure what you mean. It's a plugin for fcp. Or do you mean what it does? Check out the stairstep thread or just download it from my homepage. /matt

matt, would you mind terribly uploading 5-10 seconds of raw D90 video so i could try toying around with it in ppcs3?
