D90 + Iscorama 36: Music Video shot this past weekend

Hey D90 owners. Here is some footage shot on the D90 with the Iscorama 36. (50mm 2.8 + Anamorphic adapter) Enjoy!

woot! glad to see your Iscorama is working out okay, which thread size diopters are you using? Are you using it with a nikkor 50mm? I was blessed today with an offer on a great deal from the universe on an Iscorama 50mm 2.8 which I am now waiting on to be sent to me. :cheesy: Looking forward to the convenience of standard thread sizes and an adapter meant for 35mm FF cameras and not 16mm or super 8!

Congrats Akira! I'm so excited for you! I am excited about the look that the Iscorama gives....very nice. I actually shot some lens flares, I'll have to post them for you later this week. (I know you're thinking about doing a feature length film....no script...no actors....ALL FLARES....at least that is the rumor on Yahoo Movies about your next project. lol)

I'm actually using the Iscorama 50mm, f2.8. I'm looking at mounting the Anamorphic adapter on the front of various lenses. I also got a wide angle adapter for it....just to see if I can shoot a little wider with it.

The diopter size threads are 72mm. They are REAL cheap on ebay....here's where I got mine: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360184299674&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

I look forward to seeing some of that "Akira Magic" on an Iscorama! Congrats again!

very nice, what did you use to record the sound? sounds pretty good!

Did you use 1 d90 or 2?

Also, what is the benefit of using these diopters? Would it just be easier to get a wider lens if you want to get closer?

I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 28mm 2.8 and between the 2 of them i do pretty well. Actually been using the 28mm more often since its great for closeups.

the nearest you can focus with these anamorphic adapters is about 5-7 feet, to focus anything closer you need a diopter in front.

Thanks so much! I used a Marantz solid state recorder (marantz pmd620). It was just sitting on the table in front of him. The condenser mics work great! I shot this with ONE D90. I may get a D5000 for multi-camera shoots...but we'll see what happens when the dust settles from the 7D. I've got my eye on a couple of CHEAP DSLRs also. (new Pentax, new Panasonic...some others...specifically for multi-camera shoots)

As for diopters....I didn't buy/use them at first....THEY ARE A MUST. No way around it....almost ALL of the shots are with diopters. (FYI) I am going the opposite direction also....I have a wide angle adapter....just to see if I can get away with it. :)

Why? What do they provide that a lens can't?

Sorry if these are noob questions, but I've never seen/heard of a diopter before.

Is there a rule of thumb on how close a +1 diopter will enable you to focus on an Iscorama?

I'd have to do a test and get back to you...

Basically you are limited to ONE distance, ONE shot length without a diopter. If I may also add....it's not a very pleasing length/distance. A sort of mid-shot with a 50mm lens. For example, the shots that are guitar string closeups...this is +7. I am maybe 6-8 inches away from the guitar. This shot is IMPOSSIBLE without a diopter. (several in this case +1, +2, and +4 TOGETHER) Does that help?

Yes but, why are you limited to one distance?
Could you not shoot the closeups with a close focusing lens, even a macro, if required?

because the anamorphic adapter on the front limits you. Just the way they are built. They don't allow closer than between 5-7 ft so you have to put a close-up filter (diopter) in front of it. The prime lens under the A-lens can be any minimum focal distance, the A-lens you have attached to it still won't permit you to be any closer without it.

Yes there is of course, read about it here (at the end):
http://fuzzcraft.com/achromats.html

so if the Iscorama closest focus is 2 meters, this is equiv. to 0.5 dioptries for the lens itself.
Add a diopter with 0.5 dioptries 1/(0.5 + 0.5) gets you close to 1 meter (focus range is 1 - 2 meters),
one with 1 dioptries (+1) gets 1/(0.5 + 1.0) = 0.67 meters (focus range is 0.67 - 1 meters),
one with 2 dioptries (+2) gets 1/(0.5 + 2.0) = 0.40 meters (focus range is 0.40 - 0.5 meters)
and so on...

Btw. diopters from +1 onwards should be achromats, not just simple meniscus lenses or you
will see terrible CA (as shown in that link I posted above)!!

Thank you
