D90 color compression is YUV422?

the compression could be an easy hack if the quantization table is in an editable format, no coding necessary. if we just have the firmware it might be a search and replace, since we can easily extract the table used from the files. it's constant quality vbr so it doesn't seem like it does anything more than applying it, no adaptive scheme. lower numbers should increase the quallity and the bitrate automatically. *assuming* that the hardware can handle the extra data of course.

I know how to code, assembly for most architectures too if needed, but i know nothing about hardware hacking; how to obtain the firmware, how to put it back and so on, which is probably the hard part. And testing. Nobody wants a brick.

Plus the firmware is probably protected with checksums or digital signatures, another area i know very little about. In short, if somebody gets the ball rolling i'm sure i can be of help, but i'm not the architect.

nikon makes money off their glass. they're not gonna release a firmware. think of nikon like a movie theatre. tickets are the cameras, concession stands are their glass.

I already have a brick! i just wanna build something liveable with it
