D90 AVI to something NORMAL??

I've browsed the internet and this forum and am still lacking something simple:

I just want to convert the .avi that comes from the D90 to something playable with a standard codec.

I've got MPEG Streamclip 1.2 on my PC and have loaded the .avi files from the D90 and they play great in Streamclip so I have the right codec there for the camera .avi files.

I have tried several Export options in Streamclip but can't seem to find something that plays on normal Windows Media Player (or on my XBox from my Windows Home Server).

Does someone have a link or something to Streamclip walkthrough for the D90?

I don't have any fancy software like Premier or FCP or anything either.

I was looking for more information on how to CONVERT my D90 video to something normal.

Does anyone know how to do this or have links to make it work?

Like I said, I have Mpeg Streamclip 1.2, but I have NO idea which options to use.

I want two results:

1. To convert the D90 AVI to a more popular AVI or MPEG format that plays on most standard stuff with standard codecs (like WMA maybe or XBox streaming from WHS, or just Windows Media Player 10 included with like every Windows laptop on earth without installing codecs). Size should be near the original file size with the least amount of loss.

2. To convert the D90 AVI to something streamable or downloadable over the web. Compression is ok, goal to make it smaller but still quite viewable.

What about Handbrake (free), or Quicktime Pro?

QT export to iPhone will reduce the file size to 10% of original and still look great (plus it is much faster than Handbrake).

I ended up downloading the free version of Prizm Video Converter and that worked out really good.

Made WMV and AVI files from the Nikon AVI files just fine and about the same size or less.

Easy to post those back to facebook or youtube too.

So I think it solved my problem.

wmv is more normal than mjpeg avi? a better idea would be to get rid of wmp, the least normal player i've ever used.

Since something like 90% of the world uses Windows I'd guess .wmv is more compatible than mjpeg .avi

But then I don't really know what I'm talking about.

see your sentence makes a whole lot more sense when you substitute compatible for normal. there's nothing normal about wmv and wmp. really really strange beasts that i normally (ha) try my best to avoid.
