D90 and HVX200 in tandem

I am experimenting with utilizing a D90 and HVX200 for a production in the following manner:

D90 for wide and mediums. HVX200 for closeups (always at the long end of the lens).

This way I figure it may be possible for seamless editing since the HVX200 will have shallower DOF at the long end.

Now my question is, do you think that it will be an issue color correcting the HVX200 to match the look of the D90 as far as the color and exposure, etc? What issues do you foresee occurring? Do you think this would work?

I want to avoid using a 35mm adapter because I plan to do quite a bit of low light shooting... and it is cumbersome.

There's a side by side comparison of the hvx and the d90 on vimeo. I think I've seen it somewhere around the forum. Look around and you will find it.

Yes I've seen the comparison. The comparison doesn't exactly compare the D90 to the HVX200 zoomed all the way in.

I'd like to use the HVX as well to double coverage and to record sound...

I've had to significantly soften my HV20 footage when working with it and my D90 on the same project. Even if my HV20 footage is wide and I zoom in during post 150% (making it comparable to 720p on the horizontal), the HV20 is still a little sharper.

Also, I needed to interpret the D90 footage within PPro to prevent retiming from 24fps to 23.976, and then I loose sound sync by 1 frame every 41.66 seconds... That sound issue hasn't been a big problem though, I sync sound in the center of the D90 footage and a frame either way is barely preceptable, even when I know its there and look for it.

I'd go the other way .. HVX for deep wides (it can handle the downsampling of those pesky fine off-horizontal lines) and D90/LEE FIX for those ultra shallow filmic closeups. And then HVX for any shot with motion, violent pans, chase down alley, etc... God bless global shutters!

Then sweat out the CC in post and you'd have a great visual story with some wow factor DOF..

I would also go with the D90 for closeups.
The D90 wide shots are just too soft.

Hmm, I think you guys are onto something.

I hope to test it out this weekend... as far as CCing the HVX200 to match the D90 for seamless cutting...

Yeah, HVX for the wide(er) shots makes more sense to me. There are some cool stuff you can get out of D90s, but I like your idea of backing up through an HVX, just make sure it is passable as a (one) language.

Taubkin,

Thank you for your response. What do you mean by 'passable as a (one) language'?

It seems everyone is pretty optimistic about the prospect of this production scenario... can't wait to try things out Saturday. I'll post results.

Sorry, "language" barrier.

Passable as one artistic direction, one aesthetic. basically, making it look as they belong to the same movie... lol
