Just bought a D90 and wanted to know about lenses. Now I know that the AF won't work with the older nikon lenses obviously, but wanted to know if I can use one of my older nikon lenses (50mm F1.4 AI) or is this a bad idea ?

Here is the style lens I'm asking about

Well the lenses that came with my camera are pretty slow and already own a ton of older 35mm lenses from my 35mm adapters, just was wondering if these could do any harm to my D90 ?

Edit to my earlier post - Sorry I just got off work and my eyes are going crossed.

the 50mm f/1.4 ai is the best idea.....I wouldn't use anything else other than a 50mm f/1.2 or a zeiss at that focal length.

No, you don't need to use this (or any other) lens, it is always a choice.

This was the joke, and it was about your post.

But everyone thinks that lens is a good choice. So go for it.

It's pre AI lenses that you need to be careful with. You would have to convert them if you wanted to use a pre AI lens. But there are pleanty of AI and AIs lenses out and about, so it should not be a problem.

a 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens, whether it's ais or an old magnifying glass in your grandma's drawer. a 50mm lens on a half sized format will give you half the field of view, that's how simple the math behind crop factors is. with all due respect i'm amazed that new people are born every day who think this is rocket science.

Is there a crop factor on DSLRs with AI/AIS lenses?

No, they are 'full frame' lenses. Nikon DX and Canon EF-S are the kinds of 'cropped' lenses you want to avoid if you have a full frame DSLR (or 35mm film SLR) - but strictly crop factor is a feature of the sensor not the lens, a 50mm lens is 50mm whatever you put it on - it is just that some cameras (with cropped sensors) will trim off some of the edges of the image (effectively giving you a smaller FOV).

I have the Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 and it is pretty soft (kind of diffused) @ f/1.2.

Although great for low light or if you want a super shallow DOF.

Maybe I should keep my f/1.4 then, it's pretty sharp wide open. I'm told the f/1.2 is sharper than the f/1.4 at f/2. The f/1.2 is getting very expensive. Then there's the zeiss f/1.4 to consider.....my head's going to explode!

so math does work..... yikes

So to get a 24mm focal length you would need and 18 mm lens
