Hey All!

Just wanted to post some pics of my D800 rig hoping for some suggestions from others using similar rigs...

How are you all starting recording/mounting your Hyperdeck?

It is a little bit of a pain starting recording while shoulder mounted, although much better than pressing record on the camera while inside of a cage...

Besides that... I love it!

Wow! I am just starting out myself and was interested in what cage, matte box you have? Looks like you're loaded.

LoL

Thanks... But most of this stuff is kinda budget

I dont really suggest the matte box I have. You get what you pay for.
If you do get a budget matte box, get a fixed one. The swing out ones are nice, but are a bit flimsy.

The Cage however I love. Its called "The Tank Cage" by Kamarar.
Its by far the best Cage I have found for the price. I just wish it had the HDMI clamp.

I really like this company as they are MADE IN THE USA at china prices.

how do you have the hyperdeck mounted? I am looking to build a similar rig with my d600, a monitor and a battery break out that uses 2 np-f960 bricks. I have not bought the hypderdeck yet but i want to see how i can mount it without spending an extra $99 on a cheese plate. Is there any screw holes on the bottom of the device? Would you also be able to tell me what kind of amperage that uses? I want to run the shuttle, d600, hdmi splitter, and a monitor off of the two bricks and i need to know how long it will run from those two bricks or if i should think of a different approach.

The cheese plate for the hyperdeck was too heavy for me so I took off the rubber base and attached it with pro Velcro. This is a quick fix as I am working on carbon fiber baseplate for it. I was worried about the velcro being loud, but I havnt had any issues with it yet.

I might just keep it that way because I really like being able to just yank it off and use it as a player...

I started with np-f960 bats on my external but I didn't like having a diff battery for everything. That's why I got the v mount battery system...

Also I needed more weight on the back to balance, not the front and would have been putting dead weights on the back.
I feel it's better to counter weight with batteries than lead ;)

Also just a quick FYI

the shuttle has hdmi in and out so you may or may not need a splitter. Also pretty much any monitor worth it has loop thru as well...

hope this helps

I know I was pulling my hair out trying to figure it all out.

Well my monitor does not have loop trough sadly. I was thinking i would run from camera to the recorder, the recorder out to splitter, splitter to monitor and if needed video village.

So without the cheeseplate what does the hypderdeck give you for mounting options? nothing?

The shuttle has a rubber mat on the bottom of it.
If you remove this mat it reveals 4 machine screw holes on the corners to attach cheese plate.

I removed the mat to see what was under there and just put Velcro in its place. It won't stick to the rubber.

hmmm, that doesnt sound super positive for mounting. i wonder if there is an easier way to trigger recording rather than the button on the deck. that way i could use the cheese plate and toss it towards the back of the rig as counterbalance with the battery breakout.

The batteries btw are why i chose the NP-f break out over the other options, my monitor and LED lights already run off of NP-f bricks so i need more of them for other things anyways.

Id love to mount it on the back but as of now, I have yet to figure out a cost effective way to trigger the record with the d800.

The shuttle is surprisingly stable how I velcrowed it though as it sits and is velcrowed on a thumb screw on the top and bottom.
I love the tank cage.

if you look closely to the second picture, you can see the Velcro on the red screw. This is the same as on the bottom where the shuttle rests and is velcrowed.

like I said, it's temporary, but quite stable... The shuttle isn't very heavy

now am i seeing something wrong? It appears that you have run the hd-sdi from the camera into the hyperdeck and then hdmi to the monitor. How did you get hd-sdi out of the d800? Do you have a small hdmi/hd-sdi converter in there?

Good eye, but No this is just my din 1.0/2.3 to BNC adapter.

I've been trying to record from hdmi but trigger with timecode though sdi.

so far havnt been able to get it to work.

Bmd doesn't know if it will work or not

yeah from what i was reading the triggering over hdmi isn't really possible.

what sort of quality difference are you seeing between the internal avchd to the external recorder?

There are many online comparisons out there...
To tell you the truth I got the thing to shoot in raw when I need to but mostly to just shoot in pro res so I don't have to convert h264 for final cut

i have seen a lot of tests online that don't really impress me much. I wonder if the added color depth makes much of a difference.

I bought the Tank cage, how do you use the sides (swiss-rod style)? Am I overlooking something, their rotational movement kinda bothers me.

The swiss rods should not spin after you tighten the red hand bolts. My tank cage came with a couple allen heads bolts to convert the larger holes into studs and the smaller holes are 1/4 20 so they fit most every accessory.
