Hello everyone,
My name is Chris Langer and I am freelance photographer/videographer in Cleveland. I recently just joined this forum and love the wealth of information here. I have been searching and looking for some guidelines or suggestions on improving my workflow. I am looking to get more out of files and hopefully there are flaws in my workflow that can be improved through some tweaking. Most of my videos are for web viewing and I feel they just don't have the punch on Vimeo like others do. I have some wonderful films that as soon as you turn on HD, they just jump off the page. Of course I am sure some of them were shot on other cameras but I seen some quality DSLR films.
I have been shooting DSLR for 3 years but I still feel like my stuff isn't quite there, still needs a ton of improvement. I am still learning how to make the best file in production. Been reading about the right shutter speed, ISO, lens choices, lighting, etc... (If anyone has any resources for really good basics of film that apply to DSLR, let me know!) I am trying to get the best I can out of the camera before heading into post-production. I have been playing around with custom camera control curves and trying to bring out the most highlight/shadow details in file before heading to post-production.
If you have any suggestions on improving it or want to post your own DSLR workflow, please share! I am also looking at Premiere CS6 as an upgrade because I have an old Adobe suite and need to update.
1. Convert all files using MPEG Streamclip - Pro Res 422 for FCP 7
2. Edit
3. I perform all of my coloring using Magic Bullet Suite and 3-way Color Corrector
4. Export via FCP to H.264 1920x1080 multi coded, current frame rate, 5000 kbps data rate (should this be higher?)
If there are any resources that detail more in-depth production or post-production workflows I would like to see them.. All I see on the net is just simple stuff like how to shoot video on your DSLR or how to convert your files for dummies. I am past that stage, I want to learn how to get the most out of my files. Am I converting wrong, is there a better way to color-grade, am I exporting wrong?
I have seen a great deal of films that look amazing on the web - Hell and Back Again (all shot on 5DII) and Act of Valor to name two off my head. I am wondering if they have special plug-ins that really bring out those files and make them shine?
Thank you for your help and I am very excited to join this community here!
