D800 manual basically sucks...

For starters, the words "audio" and "sound" do not appear anywhere in the index.

So, for starters, it took me a great deal of time to 'discover' that the headphone output is disabled if an HDMI device is connected *and* powered. Connected and *not* powered leaves it alone; a factoid that may or may not be in the manual, but hell if I could find any mention of it despite repeated searches and hands-on trial and error...

And yes, I do know that many devices kill analog audio outputs when HDMI is active, but I had assumed that one might be expected to be able to hear audio off the camera while merely using a small, non-sound-capable external HDMI monitor. Silly me...

Other sound-related controls lent themselves better to prolonged hunting expeditions than manual surfing as well. Then there's the non-sound related mysteries...

Unfortunately, I've wasted a *huge* amount of time in these efforts.

And I *do* RTFM...

I will be ordering my 800 on Monday, but have already started to RTFM. Thanks for your heads up with this issue—as you've undoubtedly saved me from lots of frustration and cursing!!!! I asked in another thread (half-jokingly) where the Barry Green of Nikon lurks? Canon has Bloom :/
 
Lest I appear to be 'Mr. Negative' above, I should add that overall I'm absolutely *thrilled* with the D800. It makes fantastic video images and stills, has great features and is very reasonably priced (never mind the even more reasonable D600!). Just sayin'...
 
One more point to clarify re the D800's headphone output muting when HDMI is active - the audio reroutes itself through the HDMI signal. It'll play through an HDMI TV or what-have-you...

Took a quick look at the SmallHD's specs, and it appears that using its headphone output (not the D800's) would work. This assumes that the SmallHD derives its audio output signal from the HDMI input, which seems highly likely. I'd verify all of that, but it looks to me like you'd have no problem there, unlike my Ikan VK7 which has no audio outputs at all.
