D800 HDMI output strange behaviour

I am a D800 owner and recently I purchased the SmallHD DP6 1280x800 hiRes monitor.
I 've read that when I record to card, HDMI outputs limits at 720p.
Well, this is my case:
Video on the monitor looks great when in live view mode, but when I press record the video cuts out as the camera is now sending a smaller video format and the monitor takes a few seconds to adjust to the new stream.

I tried both 720p and AUTO in setup/HDMI/output resolution.

When I set AUTO then:
I am in the menus: DP6 receives 1080i signal
I am in Lv: DP6 receives 1080i signal
I start recording on card: DP6 turns to blue and then receives 720p signal

When I set 720p then:
I am in the menus: DP6 receives 720p signal
I am in Lv: DP6 receives 1080i signal (!)
I start recording on card: DP6 turns to blue and then receives 720p signal

My other settings:
D800 fw: A:1.01 B:1.02
DP6 fw: 2.1.1
D800 movie settings: 1920x1080/25fps/hQ
D800 setup/HDMI/advanced: Output Range=Limited, output display size=100%, Lv OSD display=OFF

I just connected D800 to my samsung FullHD 40'' TV
Same behaviour, when in Lv it displays 1080i, when I press record, signal stops for 1 sec and then turns into 720p

Just tested my D4 AND my D3200
both same behaviour, when I press record, image disappears and comes again in 720p

I shall make another statement.

No matter what I choose in HDMI settings (I tested many combinations) I cannot get the monitor to show video continuously from Lv to Recording.
I tested 3 cameras, 3 cables and 2 HDTVs !

I think the camera just has to turn the HDMI port off for an instant as it switches from 1080 mode to 720 mode. It's easy to work around the flash by just starting your recording a little earlier.

BTW, I have a D7100 and it has the same behavior with the signal flashing off for a second.

That's the reason it should always output 720p in HDMI
It CAN do that, since it outputs 1080p in Lv and 720p during recording...

Did I mention I connected all my Nikons (D4, D800, D3200) in all my HDTVs (Samsung, Sony, Panasonic) and all of them had the same hiccup

Nikon's design flaw ?

I think most people, including myself, want to record 1080p out the HDMI port. Or at least have that option.

Nikon's design flaw ?

I agree with you that the camera should be able to output 1080p out the HDMI and record it internally at the same time. But I'm not sure if it's a design flaw. Maybe the processor just doesn't have enough power to do it. At least they give you the option to record 1080p externally if you don't record internally.

The image processor isnt fast enough... Remember the 5D mkII scale down during recording? Same thing here. The difference is that the 5D resolution during recording via hdmi was 480p (i think).

You didn't get it...
Design flaw I mean the incapability of delivering continuously 720p in HDMI (not 1080p and then 720p)
It's not a processor matter, since it does deliver 720p in HDMI during internal recording.

What I simply ask is 1080p in card and 720p in HDMI continuously

Hey what I discovered today is that
when recording in 720/50p the HDMI output turns into 576i
I just tested with two monitors, it is true. And it is really frustrating

Not a design flaw, it's documented in Nikon's D800 sales brochure on page 9:

*When video is output through HDMI interface simultaneously with recording
to a CF/SD card, output image through HDMI interface will be smaller than
1,280 x 720.

When the D800 starts internal recording in 1080p, it switches its HDMI output to a lower resolution. The momentary video interruption you see on the external monitor is a typical HDMI glitch, and there's nothing Nikon can or should do about it.

I didn't complaint about the incapability of two 1080p streams
but about the missing HDMI setting so I can set it at 720p (or lower) forever
