D800 DR vs 5D III

well, that's what a difference of 14.4 vs 11.7 stops of DR in RAW stills mode looks like - in video mode, the D800 is also clearly on top, but not so by such a wide margin: I would rate them at 12.7 vs 11.5 stops of DR, using Flaat_13p and Flaat_12p respectively; and that's absolute DR, many people will argue that useable is something like 12 vs 11 stops (Flaat_12p vs Flaat_11p)

Hi, have you seen this video below where they test the Ninja from the internal codec. As I thought there is a big difference when there are motion. But do you think it would also affect the DR? With the hacked gh2 you can get much better DR because details in shadows are preserved and can be recovered in post compared to stock 24 mbit. Alas the gh2 does not have custom profile so the curve is applied later in post because the info is preserved.

Nice test.
I've sent him the full Flaat suite, in case he wants to test Flaat_13p with the Ninja.
But I'm not very optimistic. Actually, I think Flaat_13p will be more useful when recording internally than while using the Ninja. In particular, I think when using the Ninja you'll get very similar results shooting Flaat_13p, or just pushing your Flaat_11p 422 footage in post.
What Flaat_13p gives you is a way to apply a heavy curve *before* the encoder crushes the image to 420 H.264. But it is applied over the result of the in-camera debayering, and I think that's already 422 8-bit.
