D800 -Best rig for movement up and down

Hello. I am just entering the world of video with a DSLR. Specifically, the D800. I'm looking for recommended gear that will allow me to apply straight up and down motion from about floor level to 5ft, and then back down again. Can anyone suggest good gear for this? I am also looking at general steadycam gear including the Merlin. If anyone wants to weigh-in on what they've experimented with and like the most, I would much appreciate it. I know there is not one magical piece of gear that can do all motion really well, I'm just looking to maximize my dollar with the most commonly used movements including dollying, up and down, panning, etc.
Thank you.

This might be overkill, but the very well reviewed Kessler Cineslider comes in a 5ft version. I own the 3ft Cineslider with Oracle Motion Controller and it is easily the best slider on the market. Depending on the motor you chose, if any motor at all, you should be able to accomplish this move with very smooth motion.
