D800 + Atomos ninja

Edited: problem fixed in the 2nd page.

Just got my D800 and I´m playing with the atomos ninja.

To my surprise, the footage I´ve recorded so far is interlaced. I´m not talking about the file format being PsF, I´m saying I see fields in the footage. So far I´ve tried 23.976 and 25. As I understand this should not be happening. Has this been discussed?

Ok, I think the problem is that the psf encoding is 1 field off, therefore, each field conforming 1 frame comes from a different frame (the previous one and the actual one), so the footage is actually captured progressively but the fields are in the wrong order. Any ideas how to solve this?

1. Have you got firmware version 2.2 on it and did you wait half a second for proper signal to work?
"Atomos are pleased to announce AtomOS 2.2 for Ninja. This OS update completes the certification of Nikon D800 and the Ninja. Customers can now enjoy the ability to record native progressive 1920x1080p24, 25 or 30 fps from both the Nikon D4 or D800. Ninja needs to be updated to AtomOS 2.2"

"The Ninja will auto detect the Progressive signal from the sensor, when the signal is locked , it will be displayed on the Ninja in the correct format and frame rate. (This may take up to half a second for the signals between the devices to be established.) If you have any questions or queries please email support@atomos.com."

2. Best I can think of is running the footage through a After Effects or using luma mattes in Vegas / Premiere / Avid:
- make a little black and white mask with repeating interlace lines
- put the footage below and make it have a luma matte of the mask
- put the footage on top, move it back a frame to match and make it have an inverse luma matte of the mask

But that'd suck to do for everything.

yoyoyo, yesss I´ve updated YOUR Ninja to 2.2 lol.

Option 2 is... well, too painfull to deal with. I can´t believe this is happening and no one noticed it.

Argh. I've been so busy I haven't had time to play with my D800E for the last few weeks. I used to have a Ninja, but have a Samurai now to work with my RED and Af100. I wish the Connect products from Atomos was out so I can try the Samurai with. Oh well, I got the D800 for stills anyway. Too bad the new firmware for the Atomos is late and won't be available until mid May (so they say).

Can you detail your setup on the D800 for output through HDMI. Also no cards in camera?

It makes no difference. I've tried with and without the card.

I don´t think you need to take the card out btw, you just can´t press record if you plan to shoot externally since the camera drops down to 720p output when recording.

I think I got it working now!

Eureka!

Alright, so the issue was that the output resolution was set at 1080 and it seems it has to be set to AUTO. No more fields when it´s switched to auto.

I´ve tested 24 and 25p and both seem to work well.

I´ve also tried recording on the atomos with the card IN and without any cards... and the output was the same in both cases, so not sure why that Nikon rep says the card needs to be removed as long as you don´t press record on the camera.

There's not much to configure on the camera. 1080i HDMI output, limited range, then in video settings 1080p24 or 1080p25.

Have you set the HDMI to Auto. Page 257 of manual. Should be in the same Menu as the Limited Range. Movie Settings e.g. 1080/24p, HDMI Output - Auto and then Limited Range, etc.

Steve.
