My college and I are both in the agreement that it is a struggle getting pin sharp images using the D800 & 70 - 200mm lens is anyone else getting this. I have been using a D5200 (obviously DX) with the same 70-200mm Nikkor lens and getting excellent shots. Is this squarely down to the massive pixel count. This is when we are shooting hand held. The camera does perform very well on a tripod but hand held is a problem.

I have both the D800 and the 70-200 mm f/2.8G VRII and I am happy with the sharpness I can achieve. Are you shooting f/2.8? Try f/5.6 at 100 mm, that's about the sweet spot for sharpness with this lens.

Sometimes certain copies of lenses aren't as sharp as others. I've heard of people trying several of the same kind of lens before settling on the one they think is the sharpest.

It does sound like a shutter speed issue, if it's not happening on a tripod.
(which does not mean I'd use a faster shutter, btw: video needs the right amount of motion blur to look good)
