D800 36mp 1:1 crop?

I guess it's safe to assume that the upcoming D800 will have the same 1:1 crop mode as the D4.
How much would the cropfactor be? Just imagine an 800mm lens in combination with that. wow.

Why is it safe to assume that?

There is not even 100% confirmation that the D800 actually will have a 36mp sensor. Plus there is no guarantee that, even if it is 36mp, it even has a video mode. Perhaps they could not process and downsample 36mp to 1080p efficiently enough so they left video out altogether. I'm not saying that this is what I believe to be the case, only that it is not 'safe to asssume' anything about a camera which we still have no definitive facts about.

Assuming that it does have a 36mp, and that it does have the 1:1 crop mode, I believe it would be beyond the resolving power of most lenses and you would end up with noticible softness and CA.

Rumors point at Nikon shooting a huge ad with several D800 in Chicago last month, so I would assume it shoots some sort of video. ;D

Hopefully Nikon will release two versions of the D800.....

A D800s using the 16 MP sensor from the D4 designed for low light performance.

A D800x using a 36 MP Sensor designed for high reolution much like the D3x.

I would purchase the low lght version every time.....at 36 megapixels you are going to need exceptional technique and lenses to make the most of that much resolution as diffraction and camera movement will be conspiring to soften your images. Good luck resolving 36 MP on a 35mm size sensor.

Smart post. I wish most users would understand this. At 36Mpx you will get wonderful blurry pixels, lenses do not resolve that much detail in real world scenarios.

The D3x makes it hard enough to resolve detail at 24 MP.....36 MP is total overkill. Diffraction limit on a 36 MP image is likely to be around f4 - f5.6. Many lenses will be IQ compromised at those settings not to mention the artistic compromises of having lenses limited to those apertures.

http://diglloyd.com/articles/Diffraction/Diffraction-TechnicalChallenge.html

As DSLRs move towards 30 megapixels and beyond, diffraction will become the dominant factor in limiting resolution. In late 2009, the 24 megapixel Nikon D3x shows that f/5.6 is the best aperture with a top-grade lens; beyond that contrast at first subtly drops at f/8, with a rapid falloff at f/11 and beyond. With a 40 megapixel camera, the limiting aperture will become f/4!

Those figures in that article may be slightly exaggerated (maybe not) but it demonstrates the technical problems those extra pixels present, not to mention the computer system overheads and storage requirements with RAW 36 MP images....16 MP is just about perfect for me.

The D4 seems like a game changing camera in the Video DSLR realm...my only concern is moire/aliasing.....if they have that issue under control and transfer the D4 specs into a D700 type body I will be first in line to purchase that camera.

Looking forward to your review/impressions of the video IQ from the D4 when it arrives ;-).

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'd know that all rumors are pointing towards a 38mp camera. They might be rumors, but they come from credible sources.
Downsampling 38mp shouldn't be too hard with today's tech. They could even resort to lineskipping to save processing power.

I doubt Nikon is making a high-res camera without investing in some proper optics to along with it. As far as i know, most high-end full frame lenses can easily resolve 50mp and more. :)

The latest rumour is that it will be announced in Feb and it has a headphone out. There's 2 versions one with an anti-aliasing filter one without.

So the one without AA filter is said to be quite a bit more expensive than the one with AA?! What's up with that?

I am well aware of the rumors, and they actually claim it will be 36mp, not 38. Sorry to be particular, but if you're going to accuse me of living under a rock, you should check your facts first.

I never said I thought they couldn't process and down-rez a 36mp sensor, only that it is not safe to make assumptions based on something we know nothing concrete about.

I would purchase the low light version either, BUT, I don't think Nikon will bring it before 2013/2014

no?

No 1:1 crop on D800 unfortunately :-(
Nikon representative said that it is such a small sensor are that it is impractical,
Canon disagrees, as it is about the same area as 1:1 crop on Canon 600D.
I believe it would be more than practical in many situations.
Nikon could even try to implement gradual digital zoom as is on Canon 600D I believe.
It could make the D800 a perfect camera.
