D80 & Speedotron

Out shooting for a retail display magazine today. Overcast & COLD so I bought a bunch of gear with me. Had to get overall store interiors, and also details of merchandising & displays.

I realized that I never really think about this, but since I went digital, I constantly switch between daylight balance (using window light and Speedotron packs & heads) and tungsten (using the modeling lights for closeups where I want reduced depth of field, like 2.8 or even 1.8) Essentially with the speedo gear (or any other pro-ish setup) you have a big, high-powered daylight rig with grids, softboxes, various reflectors, and also a close-up tungsten rig, using all the same gear. I shot all of this stuff with one 812 pack, two heads, one with a translucent umbrella and one with an 11" grid head. Also used a 500 watt tungsten softlight to warm up the BG in one shot (of the 30 I knocked out today, in three locations). I had two more packs, a monolight, and 2 more heads and a ton of stands in the car, but never took 'em out. Those 250 watt modeling lights are handy - doing this in the film days would've been almost impossible.
