D7100 & crown maple

Nice! It looks that the D7100 can compete with the big guys. Thanks for sharing!
It has a ton of DR and I'm getting used how it handles. A few things I do is I switch back and forth between picture and video in live view. That way I can grab the exposure info from the picture mode and apply it manually in video mode. It also helps to have an EVF with zebras and focus peaking. I also assigned the shutter release button to start recording video which makes it quicker to fire up and start recording right away. Playing with custom picture controls and neutral with contrast set to -2 is a lot more forgving on the FPN then setting a flatter gamma curve. Neat video cleaned allot of the FPN up and its common to have to do some post sharpening and noise reduction even with our productions envolving Red Epic, C300, GH2 etc... I just wish there wasn't any of the horizontal FPN with this sensor.

When you import your footage from the camera, how is the compression and what type is it also. When I get mine, I would just use the in camera compression.

And could you explain the problem of FPN.
thanks

I noticed you have a GH2. Anything you want to share about the difference or similar of the two cameras like low light handling, color, wb, ect in video mode, and also in camera video compression.

The clips are MPEG 4 - H264 at 4.1L, 8bit 4:2:0. They average about 22-27Mbps. Fixed pattern noise (FPN) shows up as random horizontal noise in the lower end of the grey scale of the video clips. It is more noticeable in high ISO's and with expanded gamma curves.

Small rule of netiquette.
Always spell out acronyms and abbreviations in first time use in a thread. What is FPN ?

That seems to be flicker caused by LED lighting...and it would be there with every CMOS camera...
The flicker is LED related. Folks don't realize not any led fixture works. The frequency has top sync with the frame rate. It's got nothing to do with the type of sensor.

it got ocluded by all the fixed-pattern noise, that's what happened... :)

The flicker you mention, would it be the same, better, or worse compared to a D600 full frame censor?
Thanks.
And is this common with cameras like the GH3?

And one more question, if the problem of flicker does happen, are you able to see it on your viewfinder while you are filming?

I don't know how you come up with some of this stuff. LED lights are used all the time in production. Even Arri makes LED lights.

The statement says: "not any led fixture works" right? Maybe the same way all fluorescent lights don't work well with video?

Flicker will be the same with every cmos camera including D600 and GH3...
It might be visible on your viewfinder and it might not, depending on how bad of a flicker it is...
Take a look at that old thread...it explains everything:

Fluorescents do work. The Kinoflo Diva is just one of many fluorescent lights used in production all the time. The trick is that you have to have right LED and fluorescent lights. Making blanket statements about all LED or fluorescents not working is just not accurate.

Ok, one more time: NOT ALL LED OR FLUORESCENT LIGHTS WORK WELL WITH VIDEO IN DSLR's. What part of that is not clear?

That's fine, but obnoxious. What was written before wasn't accurate. And I don't feel like getting into a grammar shouting match to point out the difference.
