D7000 uses B-frames for encoding

Ok, so how does the D7000's B-frames @ less than 24Mbps compare to however the 5D is encoding at over 40Mbps?

In the real world will this mean anything other than smaller file sizes & lower bitrate?

I want to add another question to ethan's: Even if the Nikon's codec is smaller, when transcoding to Prores, will the final be the same size as Canon's codec transcoded, or will there be a difference?

That is great news, and means you can't compare the bitrate of the D7000 with the Canon 5D at all.

According to http://vimeo.com/15196497 the D7000 bitrate is 24 Mbp/s and if that really is a proper full AVCHD implementation that may be very good indeed.

simply put no there will be no difference. prores is vbr though so it always varies a little bit depending on the image and the noise level for example.
