D7000: Suggestions For Lens to get Shooting

Hey,

I Did a Search on this topic, couldnt find anything at least in the title that seemed to help, of course if anyone knows anything just send the link along.

Looking to purchase a D7000 and wondering, from people who use this camera to shoot video, what lens would you suggest (preferably just two) that would help me jump right in and start shooting my short.

I like Prime Lenses, maybe a 35mm and a 50mm? what would you suggest.

......and DISCUSS!

Thanks

Nate

Pick up older manual focus lenses, as the autofocus is near useless in video mode.

They have the distinct advantages of being easier to focus, smaller, cheaper, and near the same quality optics of their modern counterparts. (Sometimes better.)

I know you wanted two, but a dream team for me would be an 18mm, 35mm, and 85mm.

You can get away with two lenses but I personally would try to pick up three, a wide lens, a normal lens and a long lens.

A 35mm will be around the equivalent field of view of a 50mm on a full frame camera so I would include a fast 35mm prime for sure. Nikon makes a 35mm f1.8 which is pretty cheap. I would also go for a very wide lens like a Tokina 11-16 but only if you have the coin. Finally, I would add a telephoto to the mix and 85mm won't cut it. I would shoot for a 135mm or a zoom that would go up to 200mm. With a wide zoom, a telephoto zoom and a fast prime in the middle, you should have all your bases covered.

Thanks Shorty,
I think from this so far I can safetly say the 35mm 1.8 I've been looking at is a definate pick up, and working at future shop I get a nice discount ;)
I dont have much coin to spend so Im thinking

Buy the nikon 35mm 1.8 new
and maybe look for a 85mm or 135mm used, (old style manual focus)

then on next months budget pick up something wide

any other suggestions on a Wide Lens for Nikon

you want at most 20mm for a wide lens on the DX sensor... If you want somthing decent, be ready to spend 400-600$$ for a wide angle.

I would bypass the Nikkor DX 35mm f1.8....whilst it is undoubtedly a super piece of glass if you primarily want to do video work the older manual focus Nikkors are better suited for this due to the presence of an aperture ring which you need for full manual exposure control on the D7000.

The 28mm f2.8 or f2.0 AIS is superb....be sure to get the CRC close focus versions though as they are far superior to the AI samples.

The 20mm AIS 2.8 is great.

The 50mm f1.4 AIS is good as is the 35mm f1.4 AIS also but both aren't really usable wide open and need stopping down to f2.8 before they shine.

Dont discount the Samyangs either....their 35mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4, 8mm f3.5 fisheye and 14mm f2.8 offerings are probablt the best value around. Just ordered a 14mm so I cant yet comment on it but I have the 8mm fisheye. They all have aperture rings so good for video work.

The Voightlander 40mm f2.0 is awesome too from all reports.

You can use modern Nikon glass (without aperture ring) on the D7000 and still get 100% manual control. You just need to set the F stop in photo mode before going into Live View.

Precisely...not what I would consider full manual control :)

yes, but the 35mm 1.8G is a great lens... its easy enough to set the camera to shoot how you want it, even with G lenses.

Thats a good point

Yes you can get your manual control with the newer lenses but ya a ring would be nice just to have access too...

Im going to check out henrys here in the city i think they sell used lenses...

as well as the site KEH.com

Does anyone use Nikon D lenses? I was considering a 24mm f/2.8D. It has an aperture ring as well as AF which is nice for stills.

Am about to get the D7000 for photo / video. Which of these standard lenses would you recommend:
Nikon 35mm, f 1.8
Voigtlander 40 mm, f 2.0
Samyang 35 mm, f 1.4

I like the compactness of the Voigtlander, but it's not as fast as the Samyang. Both should be very good for MF. Nikon's cheap and apparently has a good quality. MF probably poor.

MF on the 35mm 1.8G inst too bad. It's a go-to lens in my kit - not as nice as some of my MF lenses, but it gets the job done.
