D7000 - Buy or not?

I need to purchase a DSLR in roughly two weeks. This will be my first DSLR for video use, having previously shot on video cameras. I do own a few Nikon lenses. I have followed this forum pretty closely for the last few weeks, and at this point I am very much in doubt whether to go with the D7000 or bite the bullet and buy a Canon. I should probably add that the job I'm gearing up for is a small production but for a paying client.

I know a few of you have had your D7000 for a week or two, and it would be really helpful if you could share some of your experiences so far, your likes and dislikes. I know it is early days yet, but just your gut feeling would also be appreciated.

It's a great camera. Totally recommend it. Shoots great video and great stills, is quiet and smooth. Has some small quirks, but is still great.

Most surround the need to set aperture on lenses without aperture rings before entering live-view. There are workarounds that I've discussed on the forum.

Also, because of its newness, you can't open RAW files in Apple Apreture.

Really minor stuff. It's a sweet camera.

Hi,

The first Nikon SLR model I owned was a new 'F' model. I have had Nikon cameras since 1969 and used them as a combat photographer in Vietnam with the US Army.

One of the F bodies even took a bullet for me. I have reasons to be very loyal to the brand.

If it weren't for a couple of robberies over the years, I would have kits that would total over two dozen bodies and over 4 dozen lenses with 'Nikon' on them (not quite so too true, as I would likely reduce some redundancies, but you get the idea). Right now I have 3 bodies and 12 lenses.

I say this to show that I'm well entrenched in all things 'Nikon'; but I'm not so sure I'd suggest one get the D7000 if movie making is what one wants to do. There are serious pixel problems yet to be resolved, the video quality is still lagging (IMHO), and I'm not convinced that Nikon is ready to step up to the plate to fix the camera and enter the race for consumers interested in DSLR movie making.

Just saying...

My best,

Mike

Nonono, buy a 7D, it´s way cheaper.

? The D7000 is actually much cheaper than the 7D, even though it's in the same class...?

No.
Get a GH2 in a couple weeks. It will take all your Nikon lenses with an adapter.

It's a cheaper build, far, FAR less of a still camera, and arguably not much better (if better at all) as a video camera. The GH2 isn't a whole lot different from the GH1.

Go for the D7000 or the 7D. Between those, I'd pick the D7000 because I like Nikon bodies and their images better. But that's personal taste. The D7000 and 7D are nearly identical video cameras.

I have a 7D and GH1 so I won't be purchasing one of these, but I have to admit it seems like a cool camera. I'm specifically interested in the low-light/high ISO performance which seems to beat out the Canon.

That's thrue,
Only I also wants to advice the same for computers please dont buy Apple computers buy windows .......

Fortunately the comparison with computer platforms is not really valid because macgregor didn't mention ergonomy. His point was about the image output. I could handle canons messed up ergonomics but not with the colors, the noise patterns and so on. Nikon is not Apple, they don't take a complicated piece of equipment and turn it into a neat and simplified version everybody can use. Nikon is more mature and cares more about quality. And you can't work you way around that, like you can with windows. Don't worry about apple, it soon will be back to where it started, if they don't fire the guy who's turning hip&cool Apple into evil&lame Microsoft.
