D7000 autofocus using video mode

I could use some help using the D7000 in video mode. I use the 24-120VR lens most of the time for my subject matter, and the camera seems to be extremely slow, or non existant at using autofocus. I have tried a few of the various settings as in the manual but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

+1 for useless.

It's not meant to be perfect for video. The fastest settings I've found for LV AF are to turn it onto Subject Tracking AF (lock on with OK button) and AF-F (full time AF).

With Normal/Wide Area AF, the camera will focus to whatever's in the box. When you move, it'll usually wait a bit, then excessively rack focus till it locks on.

With subject tracking, it refocuses less since it's following something (which usually isn't moving forward and backward quickly). This also means it doesn't rack focus in as nearly a haphazard manner since it's locked onto one thing, so it's more accurate and faster to regain focus. Just make sure you lock onto something with high contrast, since this is a contrast detection type AF, or the camera will go nuts. ;)

You can use autofocus to set the initial focus, then take it off and go in manual mode and fine tune it. The camera does not know what you want to feature especially if you offset your subject. The autofocus mode is also slow and is not designed for video. Better to not use it.

I like using the auto focus during recording for some nice machine-racks.. otherwise, its totally worthless - slow and easily confused.. my standard workflow is to dial in exposure, focus (using either auto and/or manual) and comp, then entering live view and hitting record. works great for EFP, not so much for ENG, where I stay in live view and use manual focus exclusively.

I use AutoFocus on my D7000 and D5100.
Works for me, but I shoot slow moving objects and refocus (AF-ON) when changing subjects.
