D7000 audio out

May sound stupid but it's not in the Nikon manual ... so, I tried plugging headphones into the D7000 AV out to see if I could monitor audio. I can hear the audio but it's blasted with buzzing and distortion. Is that just the wrong thing to do and it sounds that way or is there something wrong with the camera/headphones?
I'm curious because I've got a Beachtek XLR to mini-jack box and I'm wondering if the quality audio will transfer to the cam and I can use it solely instead of my HVX for audio. Beachtek is in storage so I haven't got to try it yet. Just loving the D7000 btw.
She can do the intricate work and HVX200 can be the workhorse.

The Audio port is for input.
The speaker is for output
Plug your headset into the BeachTek to hear what you are recording.

AV out supplies audio and video to a monitor so wondering why not headphones. I don't want to use the Beachtek as I can't hear any in camera noise. Great camera but I don't trust the audio.

I don't think AV out supplies any power.
Maybe the signal is too weak to hear?
Maybe you could plug something into the (AV out) USB port?
When I plugged an adapter in the sound stopped.
How about an adapter to the HDMI port?

The static you hear may be the in-camera amp.
I had the same problem with the 5D2 until I turned it off,
as far as I know you cannot turn off or even adjust the D5100 or D7000 amp.

My understanding was that during live view video recording, there is no usable audio out.
It does function well for me during playback.
BTW, I found the audio quality of the Nikon d7000 to be quite noise free.
When using an external mic though, I found the noise increased. I'm not sure what was
causing that, the mics, the camera preamps or the beachtek adapter.
I ended up using an external recorder (sony pcm-d50) for best audio quality and syncing
in post with the camera's audio. In most cases the camera's output was good enough but
outdoors in windy conditions a deadcat on the sony helped with wind noise.
