D7000 Audio Monitoring

I asked awhile ago if anyone had checked to see if there was an audio signal coming out of the AV jack while recording. Now that I have a D7000 I checked it myself and the answer is no.

So if anyone is shooting with a monitor plugged into the hdmi and your monitor has audio, can you tell me if you can monitor audio that way?

And could you tell me what small monitors actually have a functioning headphone out? I know SmallHD doesn't, and when I asked, they said they have no plans to add it to the current model, and no current plans to add it to future models.

I know a second system would be best, but I'd just like to know. TIA

You are correct about "current" products. A future product (Q1-'11) will have a headphone out. That is about all I can say at the moment.

Unfortunately it seems like there is no audio monitoring output over HDMI when recording or in live view. This is in keeping with typical prosumer standards I guess, with the desire to avoid audio feedback. There is audio out when playing back.

On another note, I roughly calculated the output resolution of the video playback. Since the image is smaller than the 720p signal, it works out to about 1000x564 pixels of image area in the monitor, which I believe is enough to focus with.

Well, that should make some GH2 owners extremely happy. Hope you can hit an attractive price point since I don't see why any higher end customers would want that feature.

Bummer on the (lack of) functionality of the D7000 HDMI compared to GH2. Nikon has a lot to learn in this market segment, and seems to be a bit slow. Or maybe they really are cutting edge and are saving the best for their triple and single digit pro lines.

Still, D7000 works for me in it's "B" role: backup for stills; b-roll and special shots for video; backpacking.

Some time has gone by since your post, but it's a good question for us D7000 users who are filming with the camera..... Here are a couple small and inexpensive (under $150) mixer peripheral solutions I found on the web. I cannot vouch for them, but they look like they would be worth it to take a look.

I've seen the tip of using a headphone splitter into the H4n headphone/lineout socket and feeding a cable into the mic input for a 5Dll. I tried this on my D7000 and in my tests the onboard camera mic is still recording the sound. Ive tried it without the splitter and different cables to no avail. If I plug my Rode videomic straight into the socket then that is what gets recorded. Am I missing something or do I need a Juicedlink or similar in order to monitor my sound and get that track into my camera files? I am using the dual sync method of synching in post but if I could get this to work it would make the synching work 100% successfully and possibly avoid the need to do that at all on some occasions. It seemed such a simple trick but doesn't seem to work with a D7000 and H4n. As I said, am I missing something (VERY likely)?
Regards to this forum which has been so incredibly useful to me since I found it. Hopefully I can contribute back at some point.
Patrick.
