D600 Firmware Update. 1 out of 2

1 out of 2 indeed.

I'm about to do it, even though I don't plan on using the hdmi out in the near future.

Same here...
The old saying “it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it” applies.

I've also made up my mind that changing the ISO is the best workaround for lack of aperture control in live view.
I just don't understand why Nikon is behind in this most basic feature...

I am curious to try the hdmi, though. Been searching around to see exactly what you get. 8bit 4:2:2, like the d800, I guess.

Btw, installation of firmware went smoothly, although the camera wouldn't proceed when I only had a 2/3 charged battery in. I had to replace it with a fully charged battery.

This make me convinced that we will not see adjustable aperture in videomode for the d600. Which is a shame. If they would have given us a histogram it would probably changed my mind about switching to the d800.

I installed it with little trouble. Just make sure its on the card in slot 1. I had it on the card in slot 2 and it wouldn't let me update. The way i work around aperture control on my lenses is just to switch the control the the lens ring rather than the command dial. This works great but you cannot get as exact of a half stop. With my 50mm 1.8D with the command wheel it goes 1.8>2.0>2.2>2.5>2.8 with the apeture ring on the lens it goes 1.8>2.0>2.8. Not a huge deal. If you really really need to dial it in that much the other option is to switch over to Photo LV and switch it. then go back. Your HDMI connection will still drop out but its not terrible.

Yes, they want people to use their product for professional or semi-professional work and don't provide a simple histogram in video mode? Just give us some basic tools or even a path to upgrade. Lets say, $39.99 for histogram or scopes firmware update. I would be willing to spend a little more for added features.

Mechanically, the D600 is a full-frame version of the D7100. Once you enter Live View mode, the mirror box in these cameras does not provide mechanical coupling between the lens iris and the camera. The camera can adjust the lens iris only while the mirror is down. This is a hardware limitation that no firmware update can fix.

I would be happy to pay a few bucks for something I can easily use to measure exposure while shooting video. I have it set up so that when i hit my aperture preview button it brings up my light meter, but histograms would be more ideal.

i have use a light meter app on my iphone. not Cine Meter specifically (its just called light meter, i will have to try cinemeter). But when I am shooting an event or something and its all fairly run and gun its not really feasible to get my phone out and meter.

I have found that the best way of checking exposure for me is to dial photo-setings (in live-view mode) to the Fn button on the front. This brings up an exposuremeter and by syncing the settings for video and photo you can have the camera show you exposure in video-mode. As long as your running around in similarly lit enviroment, it can work pretty ok.

I do it like this:

1. Go into menu->custom settings->film->g1 Fn-button for video->show photography information.

2. In Video-live-viem, click the Fn-button to get exposuremeter and the ability to set photosettings

3. Keep syncronize the photosettings to your videosettings, and check exposure as you need.

Hey, thanks! I just did this. Not only can I see my light meter now, I can also change my aperture in video live view, even when recording!

Ha, I was wrong. When you have the Fn button pushed, the changes are only being made in photo mode. They aren't actually changing the video settings.
