D5000 problem

I just bought a D5000 with a 2gb card the other day and shot abunch of photos and video clips on it...now i am trying to get all the files off the camera onto my macbook pro and it wont recognize the camera... I tried connecting with the USB cable provided, restarted my computer, turned the camera off and on again, and no luck....
Can anyone help??
 
Did your camera come with the software CD? Install that and it will (I mean should ;-) recognize the camera.
 
unfortunatly my my macbook had an issue were it keeps spitting out certain discs.....so i cant install the nikon software....so a card reader is the way to go?
