d5000 initial impression

we just got the d5000 into best buy today. i was pretty anxious to play with it, but after a few minutes, all i could see was jello. even slow pans (handheld) showed enough for concern. i didn't have my own sd card, so i haven't been able to view the footage on my computer, but through the camera lcd it looked like about the same degree of skew as the d90. the DOF was nice and the LCD looked pretty sharp, but that's no real indication of what it actually looks like.

this certainly wasn't an in-depth overview. i was really just checking to see if it had any less skew than the d90 (it didn't). if the d90 video is good enough for you, save the money and get the $849 d5000 instead.

jello will be more noticeable handheld because it's lighter than a D90. The brain is identical.

So what are some advantages and disadvantages between the D90 and the D5000. Cause if i can save a few bucks i will!!

Lets make a list plz! :)

well the price difference is minimal

the only advantage of the D5000 is the swivel display if that's important to you. It doesn't have an external manual white balance control which would annoy me. and if you're taking stills it's lacking the lcd display. My biggest concern though would be if the smaller body overheats faster. the D90 gets hot fast enough as it is. I wouldn't risk it without testing both together. The D5000 also has a smaller battery from memory.

I wouldn't buy anything until june for the following reasons-
The GH1 is about to be put through it's paces by dvx resident pro's
Nikon have acknowledged they are working on a D90 firmware update
D400 release imminent

when are the 400 rumours going to be validated and do we know expected release dates?

The D5000 arrives in my best buy in one week. Guess we wait to see what the conclusion on this is. Mind you the D5000 comes with a 18-55 lens, so the D90 has one up on that. But the swivel display is kinda great..

Now if its the same brain, overheats at the same rate and locks us into 5 minute recording intervals, all things being the same it might be a better purchase if the LCD holds up enough to get accurate focus.

But June isn't coming fast enough to get info on the D400 damnit!

A question: When and if Nikon releases a firmware update for the D90, for video manual control... how probable is it that they do the same for the d5000? Or will the same firmware work for the d5000?

I'm thinking that maybe they will update the d90 for manual control, but leave the d5000 crippled as it is, to maintain the d90 value. It's kinda funny Canon didn't announce a firmware update for the 500d T1i, huh?

well, the d90 and d5000 are very similar internally. the sensors are identical, as far as i know. that's not even remotely the same with the two canons. they probably need different firmware to work with different hardware.

So are you saying that one might be able to use the eventual D90 firmware upgrade on the D5000, given that they're so similar?
