D3200 Announced

Where does it say that it has manual exposure settings in movie recording?

Never mind. I found it on the Nikon site.

looks like a great competitor for the T2i (sigh...) - (ok, this one could be aliasing/moire free, but looking at the D800 I wouldn't bet on that)

Finally an affordable DX sensor Nikon with 720/60p!

Fully Manual exposure settings In live view Too!
definately replacing the d5100's out there.

It still has the work around for aperture...you have to set it before going into live view. Not a huge deal, but something people might want to know before deciding between this camera and some others. It does have a mic input with 20 levels of sensitivity, and the iso and shutter can be adjusted in LV before hitting record. So basically one would frame the shot with the view finder, adjust the aperture...and THEN hit the live view switch, do other adjustments, then hit record.

nearly all my lenses are manual, I can live with that :) what I need to know is how bad are aliasing/moire, any samples yet?

I'll bet it's probably similar to the D800 as far as aliasing/moire go. I would just imagine it's not BETTER than the 800 or the D7000. Still though...for an entry level, they aren't leaving anything (video wise) off. It has the nice screen, the audio control, the input for a mic....and what I've noticed is that the Nikon's ALL have a look to the video that is pretty pleasing right out of camera- subjective of course- but if one likes that look, here it is for CHEAP! Well done Nikon.

well, if aliasing/moire is still there, I don't see any reason for thinking this is any better than the T2i (ok, maybe DR, but that's about it)

I have a nice set of classic Nikon AIS primes and was wondering about getting a crop Nikon this year since I've never had a Nikon DSLR before and like many, feel that the image has some degree of character (and especially as Samuel has ported over his suite of picture profiles!). I thought I would wait for the D300s replacement, but if the video quality is the same as this entry level camera, maybe the D3200 is a good low cost way for me to experiment? Thanks to the Falk Lomo blog we now know more about how the full frame Nikon video image was derived, but this will be the first crop Nikon using Expeed 3 and the video image is still an unknown -- with a smaller sensor than the D800, perhaps it will surprise us. One thing I miss from the Canons is the articulated screen, though.

I have tested my Flaat profiles with the D7000 and found them not to be 100% adequate
they work, but they don't look like they do on the D800
I'd have to re-work them, custom tailoring for that camera, if they're to be used for anything serious

no idea if in-camera processing in the D3200 is like in the D800 or like in the D7000; I'd guess like the D800, and I'd like it to be that way (it's a lot better), but we have to wait and see

also, the sensor in the D3200 is the same one as in the sony nex-7, I'd expect video to be somehow similar, at least in terms of line-skipping and jello

DR-wise, I'd be happy if it works like the D800 - but my next camera will have a clean image, with no aliasing/moire; unless I get that, I see no point in upgrading

Samuel - do you have a particular camera in mind that meets your requirements? The BMD camera maybe?

I'm hoping a crop Nikon will make a good video image this year, though I may wait to see if they similarly refresh the D5100. That camera has a side-hinged LCD, which is important to me (I think its criminal to ruin a shot because I can't properly see a fixed LCD), though the video datarate is 18 Mbps. Will the new camera (let's call it the D5200) have 24 Mbps like the D800?

The bmc looks awesome. Make it aps-c and 60p and it's basically perfect (at least for my needs)

D5200 should have this same 24 mpix sensor, which from the nex7 we know does line skipping, and with current nikon processing will probably suffer from aliasing/moire (still eagerly waiting to see D3200 samples...)
