D300s video-in HD quality

but canon have improved their video function, panny most likely will. again, it's not the problems per se, it's the lack of interest in fixing them.

duh, "when the woman opens the curtains"? i'm glad you've realized that it's not us who have missed something but you. :-)

ok I was hoping you would put the time is was in the video.....like 1:32 ,,,duh!!

I was to busy thinking how good the video was.

Matt you seem to have a problem talking here.

canon and the panny also has problems are you mad at them?
I watch the video and to tell you the truth I thought it was really good. I didn't see what you are talking about,,,,,where was it on the video?

common, the stairstepping thingy is not a problem... its a joke that it was left in the state it was released in( and now looks to be appearing in 3 cameras ). The fact that some smart folks around these parts came up with fix for it was lucky for the D90 users otherwise you'd have to be happy with the visual evidence of every 8 line missing from an image that they didn't even bother to try to cover up.
5D and others cut resolution from the censor in various ways to achieve the final video output but you can't clearly see the cut out lines starring you in the face.

I am not doubting there might be improvements. It's just that the same thing appears... big production value videos in small format with carefully picked shots.
Seriously if you think we are pixel peeping, you should know that these videos have been looked at in the greatest detail before they were released.

Is this curtain stairstepping when the girl is pulling apart the orange curtains.....maybe it is my eyes of my Macbook Pro but I don't see anything. But it sure must be pretty minor

I just don't think it is so bad that I would say Nikon doesn't care and I'm jumping ship to a 30p DSLR camera.
All I can say again and again is the video Nikon has put out is not bad.

This camera is not even out yet. I cliclked on the youtube video and some kid was comparing the D300 and the D300s....of course he only had the D300. So he was going to compare the cameras with only one of them?

Please look again I linked to an actual video file from the D300s. By the way I don't see stairsteps in this clip, e.g. at 0:14 the D90 would show stairsteps.
Anyway Nikons D-movie seems to improve in micro steps and thats dissapointing. At least with the low data rate we can use any card and don't have to worry about writing speeds. What a great feature ;-)

Nikon doesn't have to include video to sell cameras. So, why would they bother improving on it when they can get Ashton Kutcher to sell the video of the D90 to millions? That's what I mean by "they don't care". It costs money to improve this same stuff they could've gotten right out of the gate.

I'll be highly surprised if the D700 is anything worth looking at for Video Related Acquisition. And since this is primarily a video-borne forum, most of us care about the still half of the camera second.

Panasonic got it about ninety-five percent right out of the gate, man. Update the Compression, give the camera Video Out and the rest is just hoo ha. And if they got it that close on the first step out, as opposed to everyone else, then the progress we can expect the GH-2 (or whatever) to show should be incredible. The RED, GH-1 and MKii comparison shows just how valid the GH-1 is in comparison. Oh, and the D90 was nowhere to be seen in any of that.

There's a good reason for that, man.

totally agree!

What for me is so disappointing and seriously confusing is that Nikon has no video division to hurt, so knocking it out of the park seems like such a no brainer.
Unless they A) don't care B) are so behind in development C) ignorant to the pot of gold waiting at their feet D) all of the above.

My view on this is, it needs great video with manual controls and all the fixin's because it will also be priced at 5D mkII levels. It is one thing for the D90 or the D300s with their problems in video mode, but as the price starts to climb, at least from my perspective (getting it for video first, stills second) they need to step it up if they want me to fork over $2,500 to $3,000 for just a camera body. Especially when Canon and Panasonic are already creaming them on the video side of things.

Also with Panasonic, and Canon as well... they could use this tech in newer HD video/digital cinema cameras. They both have good track records with video. Nikon doesn't do video beyond what they include in their still cams. And so far, using their recent track record with video, I'm not optimistic about the possibility of a dedicated HD video/digital cinema camera ever coming from Nikon.

People think that the D90 and 5DmkII, and GH1 are the game changers. Well, not to downplay their importance, because they were the start of something great. The real revolutionary camera will probably be a m4/3 P2 HD camera from Panasonic or that rumored APS-C XL-body style thing from Canon. I think either of those, unless their was some blatant F-up, overly ridiculous pricing, or cripple-age done on purpose; would be more of a revolution than any of the Scarlets.

well the video still looks good and if what these people made was without using plugins and a bunch of work in post it will do well.

be ready around the internet what other people are saying too like this about the D300s video

'If more tests confirm this, then I'll believe the rolling shutter artifacts are virtually gone now, due to Nikon's reported improved processing power and improved compression quality. For now, I still think it's not high on their priority list to really improve anything video related, especially if they dropped the ball on manual control.
My hopes are riding on the D700 successor.
Now that I've been using the 5DmkII, which is my first full frame DSLR, I don't think I'll go back to crop. I'm pretty happy for now but there are areas Canon can't improve on that Nikon does. 24p is a significant difference. And the D700's AF system is much more advanced than the 5D's. I'm looking forward to a full frame 1080p, 24p, manual control, high quality codec, & 0 rolling shutter artifacts. I think NIkon can easily do this if they decide it's a priority.'

"One thing I've got to hand to Nikon is that they have less of a videolook than what I've seen from 5D MKII. For some reason especially the highligts on the MII looks very digital and video'ish to me.
Nikon IMO looks more organic."

But I guess will see. I don't like the 5 minute limit.

There are a lot of photographers out there. There are a lot of YouTube video makers out there. Not as many indie filmmakers.

shoot in neutral with the sharpness, contrast, and saturation turned down and you get something akin to Matt's custom curve on the D90, it still needs further tweaking however. The standard setting sux, even neutral without tweaking looks good just look at mike kobal's latest clip

Me too I just don't think Nikon is listening but the D400 could hopefully be a different story and 1.5x crop is the way to go for filmmaking.

Rumor has it that the D700s will have H.264 which is the major crippling flaw with the MKII. H.264 was designed as a delivery format and is not great for acquisition. High bit-rate mjpeg or photo-jpeg would be a better option, mjpeg was originally used for compressing and editing analog source material. The Pentax K7 75Mbps mjpeg stuff looks great and I think it would handle low light a lot better with no banding/macro-blocking. In low light the D90 just got noisy but the codec didn't seem to fall apart like these H.264 cams do. Also there's no mud with mjpeg, sure it's less efficient but CF/SD cards are relatively cheap.

Looks good. I've got no complaints with it
