D300s at the beach

Again I'm impressed with the look of the D300s. It is no doubt more organic looking than the Canons, and the roll-off is much smoother.

so the same issue as with the D90 ?
wow, wt#!* !!!
that's really bad. I was hoping that at least the overheating part was taken care of...

the guy who made this said he had no problems with overheating or jello.

That's why I mentioned that I was filming toward the sun. Just like the D90, the time you get to use it before overheating depends on how warm the environment is. If it's directly under the sun, then it overheats more quickly. At least, that has been my experience.

I guess in that case it could be a good thing. It might be a good idea to shut down before your camera gets damaged.

if it does overheat outdoor, even in the sun, it means that nothing has been changed and we are still in the same overheating bullshit game.
to me that's the biggest drawback when using this camera.
we use 2-3 three when shooting serious stuff and then it becomes a non issue, yet I truly wish they address this problem in the future nikon dslrs.

again I have people telling me it does not overheat. Maybe it does under real hot conditions now. Under normal conditions? Maybe under normal conditions. It would be a pain if it did it all the time.

You know what? Let me have a little more time with it to make sure that when it switched back from LiveView, that it really was overheating. I remember having a low battery problem not too long after. I don't want to create any confusion.

Ruzo, if you have the time obviously...would you mind recording 4 X 5 minutes straight ?
I believe the warning should pop when you do your 4th run.
If it doesn't , try 5th time.
it would be much appreciated :)
thank you.

Do you want the test inside or under the sun? (no sun for a few days in NY though)

I hope Nikon keeps improving on their video mode, I can't help myself, I find it looking much more organic than the other vDSLRs everytime I see (well shot) footage.

you don't have to record, just put it in live view and wait until it switches off. the d90 usually gets 30 minutes in normal conditions. i haven't tested any extremes but i don't think the difference is huge actually.

Ok, I did a little test in a comfortably air-conditioned room. The D90 reacted predictably by staying on LiveView for about 35 minutes. When I put it back on, it stayed for a couple of minutes and the 30 second count down started before shutting down.

Now, the D300s was pretty strange. I switched it to LiveView and it stayed for about an hour. It took me a couple of minutes to realize that it switched off so I switched it back on immediately. At about 30 minutes, the battery died so I quickly changed it and switched it to LiveView. I kept turning AEL on and off every few minutes to make sure that a lack of activity would not make it switch off. It stayed on for at least 45 minutes but by that time, I had to leave. When I returned, it was off. I have to add that the body was pretty hot during that time. I still don't know if there is a count down before switching off. There is obviously great improvement though.
