D300s and FCP settings help!

I thought I'd finally try some video out on the D300s. So I took some video of trains. The question I have is what should I video import and export setting be for the D300s? I have the capture preset: 48khz advanced 2:3:3:2 pull down for the DVX100b. What size should I export the video out as? 1280x720 looks bad. What is the best compression be and this might be a stupid question but does importing a video file not the same as capturing tape? Or is it really the same thing? Sure a lot easier! Here is a test video of the trains.

This one is shorter but it looks a lot better. Not sure what I did.

Anyone? So I run the .AVI file into MPEG Streamclip. then I do the following (on Mac):
1) Choose File -> Export to QuickTime...
2) Compression -> Apple ProRes 422
3) Quality -> 100%
4) Sound -> Uncompressed, Stereo, Auto
5) Frame Size: 1280x720 (unscaled)
6) Frame Rate: Blending and downscaling UNCHECKED
7) Interlaced Scaling UNCHECKED (VERY IMPORTANT FOR D300s VIDEO)

That file was to big so I tried H.264 which worked but the viewer window didn't work to well. Here is a small clip from that. I must be missing a step in the FCP settings.

your streamclip settings are correct, interlaced scaling doesn't matter since you're not scaling though. use the prores 1280x720p24 preset in fcp and change the frame rate to 24. if you don't like prores file sizes I'm not sure why you want to transcode since fcp handles the avi's just fine, even in rt if you set it to unlimited. good luck.

Matt I have no problem getting the ,AVI files right into FCP and it all works great. It is once I'm done and export it out. So I guess I just need to change the sequence preset.

I'm saying if you don't transcode to prores i don't think you should transcode at all, the avi's work as is. if your clips look good on the timeline but not on export it's not a preset issue, it's your export settings. and the output resolution shouldn't matter for whether it looks "good", i export 720p material as qvga, pal, 720p, 1080p or whatever i need to deliver in all the time and they always look the same just scaled differently...

Well I thought I'd save some time and I deleted the video off a timeline in one of the sequences already there. Well after talking to you and reading it seems the sequence can't be changed. so I was putting the D300s footage in a timeline for the DVX100b. Not a good idea. So anyway it looks better now and I'm sure I can improve it more. I'll just keep playing around with it. You can watch it in HD now
