D300

The D200 came out in 2005 and the D300 came out in early 2008. That is last year!

Why would they update a camera one year after their last? For a niche video market during a recession? That seems crazy to me.

What real proof(besides unsubstantiated rumors) do we have that there would be any reason for an update? Because we want a better video camera?

That seems to be the only reason. Photographers are always talking about how they don't need to upgrade their D300, and how it is crazy to release a pro camera so soon after the last. The photographers are the bread and butter for Nikon....

Maybe a d400 in the works, but that doesn't mean it is coming out anytime soon.
Just sayin...

What you say definitely makes sense. But then in following that logic, you would expect that other companies would be doing the same thing, yet the Scarlet is coming, the Canon 5D Mark 2 may be releasing firmware, Pentax is coming out with their camera, so it would be lazy and a mistake for nikon to not answer to the public's needs, no matter how small the video market may be. It would be a big loss.

I am sure you are mistaken, the D300 came out mid 2007 with the Nikon D3. We are nearing the 2 years update cycle of the D200 - D300.

D300 came out at the end of November in 2007. It's not even the end of May, so the camera will be meeting its 1 1/2 year birthday at the end of May.

What does that have to do with launching the predecessor to a camera that isn't even 1 1/2 years old?

Scarlet hasn't even come out yet and is not an upgrade from any former Scarlet.

Pentax hasn't come out with any video camera yet. Nikon already has 2, the D90 and D5000.

Canon may release firmware and so might Nikon, but that doesn't mean they will, and we don't even know what that firmware update would be anyway.

According to DP Review,

D100 announced 2/23/02, available summer 02
D200 announced 11/1/05, available 12/05
D300 announced 8/23/07, available 11/07

The cycle between the D200 and D300 was less than 2 years, so it's certainly possible that the D400 will be announced within the next several months, with availability later this year.
